Benchrest Accurate Barrel for Rim-X

There is zero issue changing barrels on a RimX if you know how to use a barrel vice and torque wrench. By design this is no issue with a RimX, it has no extractor grooves...

Torque all your barrels to the same spec so everything is the same

I torque all my RimX barrels to 50ft lbs. They shoot the same as before when putting back on.

Now my 2500x is a different story...

It has 1.25" "breech" section. It is their "R0" contour.
Ratchet barrels seem to be as hard to pin down as aBigfoot. I have had zero luck finding one. I'd buy one just to see how it shoots.

With everybody saying the same thing, I figure I'll just cool my heels, wait and let Mike do his thing with the barrel, and I will start looking for a stupid accurate stock. I looked at the Foundation stocks, but the lead time is pretty long, so I will keep looking.

I'd like to hear more about the barrel swapping on your 2500X.

Thanks

Okay...I'll play.

Let me try it this way........in what way is your 2500x a different story???

Your reading into this way too much and sound like your looking for that gotcha moment.

My 2500x is a different story from the previous sentence you arent quoting in that its NOT a switch barrel rifle and Im not switching barrels. The barrel is setup and installed and timed by the smith and left alone... Or until a new barrel is installed and the old barrel is retired....

Completely different story then my RimX that I have a pile of barrels for, all torqued off and on to the same 50ft lbs, no extractor groove timing no accuracy change or effects.

Hey Jerry, I read it the way you did too. almost like a lead on that the 2500X was different in switching barrels.
but I do have to wonder why so many barrels are needed. how many barrels have you put on your rifle since you bought it!;)

Lee..I guess I must be reading this differently to you guys.

I'm sure Dominic can speak for himself but he has been a "test pilot" for the Rim X action from day one and from memory, I think he has fitted 40 odd barrels to that action and provided a lot of great information for us Rim X owners.
Last I heard, he was playing with a 2500X - Completely different platform and use and he wasn't planning to swap barrels around as he had with the Rim X.
For the OP, just me but if I was looking to build a rim fire repeater with ultimate accuracy in mind, I wouldn't choose Rim X. - That action is aimed more at the PRS crowd and suits that role admirably. I'd prefer to have a one off complete build done by a competent rim fire smith - Something along the lines of an Anschutz 1761 action. I have a custom done on that action - Would make a great "squirrel" rifle for you US based fellows and arguably the most accurate 22LR repeater I've had put together.

Allan.

Thanks Allan, I think it is because at least for me I don't follow the latest trends I couldn't read between the lines so the speak.

Lee, as stated in my above post, my 2500x has the first and only barrel fitted for it and installed by Lee Gardner which is a 1.2" straight MW 8MI... This was the only acceptable blank I could find and available at the time so I had Lee fit it and install it until I could get my hands on some 0.900 straight blanks.

I now have a MW and a Shilen ratchet 0.900 straight blanks sitting here to send to Lee to fit for my 2500x and to install tuners on. Ill test them both and whatever shoots the best will be the one that stays on my 2500x

I hope that answers your question.

Two weeks ago seen a CZ 457 with a new Lilja tite bore prefit installed by owner that look like it had good potential.

Yes Sir and I was hoping to learn something is the reason I asked the question. I've also seen where he's mentioned on other forums and threads of having several barrels to try on his 2500X.

Me....I've only ever had one barrel. Heck....I only have one 22LR competition rifle!!! LOL!!!

I actually was talking about the Rim X, but I guess you do test of barrels for them. if you haven't tried a Benchmark, I highly recommend them especially the 3G in the last 12 years I have not had a single bad one.

Benchmark sent me 2 blanks for the initial RimX testing and yes they shot really good. Especially with R50. I left it up to Benchmark on what they wanted to send for the testing and they sent 2 of these...

Hey Jerry, FWIW there are guys in ARA that have several barrels (each with a tuner) for their 2500X and they do change them fairly often. A guy you'd know from RFC and RA buys ammo blind (like I do) and then he tests it in different barrels and leaves the one installed that does the best. His agg for the year so far is way better than mine. So he's doing ok IMO

Is there a a barrel profile that is reasonably responsive with a tuner if I wanted to try one, but still of a heavy enough configuration to not necessarily need one? I read where 1.25” doesn’t respond well, but M24 does in most cases? Or MTU?

What if the preferred barrel contour for a full up bench rest rifle with a tuner? I understand they are pretty thin?

Also, the whole thing on muzzle threading, some say don’t do it, some say it’s fine if done correctly, certainly my Vudoo is threaded and shoots extremely accurately with a thread protector on. Mike says he will thread, no problem, and he hasn’t had any problems. Another rabbit hole? It seems threading will give me more options later?

This is just my thoughts on what you are asking.

If you blend a PRS and Benchrest rifle together, I'm thinking it will not perform at its best in either.

My understanding is muzzle threads are a no go on button rifled barrels and button rifled barrels are preferred for Benchrest.

I see a lot of .850 to .950 diameter barrels used in Benchrest, all with slip on tuners. My barrel is 26.25" long and .920" diameter at the muzzle.

Just for clarification, when I say Benchrest I'm talking about ARA Unlimited Class.....it's what I compete in and I'm fairly new at it also.

I did have my Benchrest barreled action in a MDT ACC Premier chassis for awhile and it shot very well. It weighed in at just over 28lbs.. I have no idea how it balanced which would probably be important for PRS.

Hope this helps Sir.

Jerry
