Bench Source Annealer Gas Hook Up Picture

Here is a picture of the gas hookup to a 20# bottle. The Bench Source annealer is a nice compact unit but I didn't like the 1 pound propane cylinders hanging out, also, the flame of the torches was inconsistant as the bottles got empty. With the same gas source the torches run the same and will burn almost forever with the 20# cylinder.

The fittings for the torches and cylinder came from Flame Engineering, the hose came from the local welding store. I already had ferrules in my hose end repair kit for my welding equipment, the barbed 1/4" MPT fittings came from Home Depot.

Thank you for posting this, weekend project coming up! I do not like the little bottles hanging off the torch tips either.

Is there a regulator inline? Dennis

The torches are the regulator just like when hooked to a 1# bottle. I know, if a line brakes etc, the lines are rated for 350 psi, I am comfortable.

You might need a fitting for the ends but heres all you'll need

Will the regulator restrict too much flow? I'm guessing a direct line to the torches would be better...just adjust the flow at the torch? Not sure what way would be best.

John W...ski,

Could you give us a list of the parts you used?

From Flame Engineering,
P-W 795
Hand-tighten Excess Flow P.O.L. Fitting
1/4" MPT OUTLET (need 1)

F-140
Cylinder Adaptor
1/4" FPT x 1" 20 Male Thread (need 2)

From Home Depot or similar,

1/4" NPT x 1/4" barbed fitting (need 6)

1/4" FPT "T" (need 1)

1/4" FPT coupling (need 1)

From Welding Supply store,

I used 10' of 1/4" 350 PSI hose. I cut two 14" peices from it, pushed ferrules onto all the ends
(ferrules can be bought at the welding store as well as the tool to crimp them) pushed in the barbed fittings and crimped the ferrules.

I made a bracket out of brass and soldered the "T" fitting to it and attached it to the annealing machine, then assembled the hoses to the rest of the parts.

I don't think the torches will work right if a regulator is used. I did not use one.

Good Luck,

John

I believe any meaningful reduction in pressure will affect the torch flame.

Just a FYI........

Here is an alternative that I copied from a friends setup. The 5 ft. hoses give a little more flexibility with 20 lb. tank placement. Torches have built in regulators.

Ron....how does the swirl flame torches compared to the pencil tip type? Do you have more or less flame control? Heat the case necks faster?

I have a different annealer than the Bench Source, which I bought used, and the torches that were recommended by KL are no longer made by Bern. I have not set this up yet, as I have been working graveyard shifts lately.

Great idea! This definitely moves the project out of the basement to the garage. I'm not comfortable with a 20# tank in the basement.
