Bench Source Annealer

I got my new Bench Source annealer on Thursday and got it up and running yesterday. I used the templaq as suggested and it seems to turn clear on the shoulder and is black and burnt on the neck. I also watched the test cases being annealed under low light and saw no hint of red or orange on the neck. Does this sound right? I just want to get it right the first time.

I also plan to hook the torches to a 20# propane tank, I have the hoses set up, but still need a few fittings that will arrive on Monday. I will post a picture after I put it together.

I am also interested in comments to your question. I have also wondered if others running a Bench Source could post their timer settings for different case sizes. I know this depends on your flame(s) adjustment, but at least we could see what others are doing.

John, will you be running the machine inside the house when you get the propane hooked up? I will getting one of these soon.

For my Hornady Creedmore brass I'm about 3.25 seconds. Winny .308 3.75 secs. Fed brass seems a bit thicker and I usually do about 4 seconds.
I tried .223 brass and I ended up using only one torch head running at about 3.5 secs.
I'm sure everyone's times will vary. Your best bet is to use some worn out or scrap brass and experiment on.

I think it depends on your flame setting and neck wall thickness also. On my no turn neck 6.5X47 cases I am running them at 4.5 seconds. I have some junk cases that I run thru until I am satisfied with my flame setting and looking at the tempilaq. Make sure you shake the tempilag well, and don't worry about any burnt stuff below the shoulder as that is the where you don't want to get it as hot. I am not seeing any hint of red or orange on my cases when cycling them thru as Bench Source says in the directions you do not want that and i trust the 650 tempilag. Some say to use the 750 tempilaq. The most time I spend is getting the flame set just perfect at right height and intensity. I turn the flames all the way up and back the "pencil" down until its about half inch away. But its tougher adjusting flame height with the bottles hanging off the torches so I will be looking for a hose setup soon before the season starts.

You can put the tempiaq on the inside of the neck to keep it out of the direct flame. Also save all your old brass to use for set up.

I have a Bench Source Annealer also and I can see that I am not alone in trying to determine the correct time. Here is my observation. Tempilaq on the inside of the neck turned black immediately when the flame hit the neck so was of no use to me. It appears the time required depends on the brass being annealed and flame intensity on the case. Both are always different everytime I set up for an annealing session. My hornet case neck heats up faster than a 30-06 case, more brass to heat up on the 30-06. I studied the video on the Bench Source web site. If one looks at the cases in the video, the flame bounces off the case in many directions but pay particular attention on the bounced flame in the verticle above the case neck. The flame above the neck is easy to see and is blue initially, then it just starts to turn yellow/orange just as the case move out of the flame pattern. I adjust my timer using practice cases to acheive that yellow/orange flame just as the case leaves the annealing area. The typical blue line around the case is about 1/4 inch below the shoulder.using this technique. I also put a strip of 350 degree Tempilaq down the side of my practice cases just to see how far down it turns clear. Generally, the bottom 2/3 of the case is uneffected by the heat. I know you readers are going to get on me for this statement but I have even annealed hundreds of primed cases without mishap. If you do this, wear safety glasses. Why did I anneal primed cases? I had primed hundreds of cases before I decided to purchase my Bench Source annealer so there I was. I hope others share their techniques and I won't take offense if I am called a dumb sh*t for attempting to anneal primed cases but until one cooks off, I won't hesitate to do it again.

Junk cases? I don't shoot enough rounds to have any junk cases yet that I can experiment with. :'( Maybe some of you that shoot thousands of rounds each season have some 6.5x47 junk cases you can sell me. PM me please if you do and I can send some money your way.

Hi, I use the Benchsource machine to anneal my 284 Shehane cases and use 2 gas burners.
I put 750f rated Tempilaq paint inside the neck and down the case to about 1/2 inch below the shoulder (see photo). The green 750f rated tempilaq changes to black to just below the shoulder and it takes about 5.1/2 seconds. The pink tempilaq is rated at 375f and I put that on just to make sure the case head does not get anywhere near 400f which will make that part too soft and could cause serious problems.
A very good machine and glad I bought it.
Good shooting all.
Les

I will run it in my garage/work shop.

The problem with posting times is some may use a different type of gas, also placement of the torch tip (Blue flame) in relation to where its pointing on the case (neck, lower neck, middle of the shoulder), also exactly how far away that tip is from the case. These will make a difference in my opinion. YMMV
