Bedding an action ?????

I only want replies from people who have ACTUALLY done this:

The stock: McMillan bench rest that is Pillared and ready for a drop
in 6 BR barreled action.

I want info from the person who has used the stock as it came from the factory, and then later bedded that same stock/action. Was there a group improvement ???

If this was an unlimited rifle w/a 24.5" straight tube, would you bed the action only, or go forward of the recoil lug, an inch or so, or not bed anything and use it as it came from McMillan ??? LDS

Good Morning, I did this with a 308 Win, working off the bench, I starting working on screw torque front and back at 20 inch pds and working up in 5 inpd steps. Using M118 ammo, I was able to consistently get 0.75 5shot groups at 40 inch pounds front and back. All the tries with different torque front and back just made my shoulder sore. (And mostly made for flyers)

I then Acraglased the action in and about an inch in front of the recoil lug to support the chamber. I believe I adjusted the trigger too. I was able to get mid 2's after this if it was not windy. I am not a benchrest shooter so was quite happy. It shot best at 45 in pds front and back.

I don't own the rifle anymore, it was a Shilen chromoloy match on a40x action. I did the barrel work.

In short, I think bedding will help!

I have Bedded a few some 1in to 1 1/2 in. under the the back of the barrel .
I have done the Action only on some.

I have Barnard Actions in a V-Block
They all work GREAT ........If they are done correct.
Don't forget the release agent

To your last question YES

Bedding the barrel can always be done after bedding the action. If you bed the whole damn thing and do not like the results it's a lot of work to undo it. If you properly bed the action and the results are satisfactory, then bed no more. If there is still work to be done you can add bedding to the barrel channel.

If you were to ask how many people with straight tubes bed the barrel, you may be influenced to not bed more than an inch or so.

I have tried this multiple times, with McMillan A-5 stocks, McMillan MBR and Manners stocks.
It will make a rifle shooting factory Lapua ammo go from 1/2 MOA to 1/4 MOA. As long as there is no stress in bedding job. Had one rifle that was bedded with .018" stress and it never would shoot good until I pillar bedded rifle with no stress.
A bad bedding job is worse than no bedding.

I've bedded quite a few McMillan stocks and I blow all their pillars right out and use my own. Their pillars are thin walled crap in my opinion. I want my pillars against the action and attach them then bed...... I know some bed differently and that's fine..... but their pillars installed from the factory will sit way below the bedding, not satisfactory for me.
I never bed forward of the action even when I'm using 1.250 32" straight tubes.
