Q re Glass Bedding Savage

First thank you to who ever maintains this site and everyone who contributes-it has been very informative and helpful. I am building a 6.5-284 Norma. I am at the point where I was going to glass bed the action. The action is as 2003 Savage round short action single shot,no cut out for the magazine). The barrel is 27 inch factory varmint contour. The two rifles that I previously glass bedded were built on Rem 700 action. If I bed the action/barrel to its balancing point I would need to bed about 2 inch's of the barrel channel forward of the recoil lug.Between the recoil lug and where I want the glass bedding to stop is the BARREL NUT. With the Rem 700s' I never had this issue.Does anyone actually glass bed the barrel nut? Should I just glass bed the action and the recoil lug and not bed the nut or the barrel? Thanks in advance for your help.

I'am no expert but, I bed about 1" ahead of the nut. After the bedding dries, I cut the high spot off, where the bedding goes into slots in the nut. Then you can remove the action and make any adjustments to the headspace or switch barrels and the bedding will still do it's job.. JMHO. Mike, and don't forget "lots" of release agent"

I bed the nut area and in front of the nut, basically the chamber area). What I do is fill in the slots in the barrel nut with modelling clay and carefully trim the excess with an X-Acto knife. When the bedding has cured, you will have a perfect contour of the barrel nut without the high spots. This set-up will allow a switch barrel set-up with the bedding supporting the barrel nut area. Some don't bed this area, others do.

There is a very good article on www.savageshooters.com. Click on Articles tab at top of page and read 'Stock Bedding 101' by Lefty.

Do some searching, but I believe there is a issue with the tang portion of a Savage action. I believe it must be free floated, but check hear and on the Savage forums to be sure.

New here but will offer up some reenforcing advise.....absolutely bed the nut but make sure you fill the slots on the side of the nut with clay. I know from actually doing it that you can and will glue the action to the stock if you do not.
