Bedding a HS Precision Stock?

HTSmith

Silver $$ Contributor
I've bedded a few walnut stocks satisfactorily. Now I'm needing to bed this composite stock with an aluminum block. How much of the aluminum do I need to remove or could I just rough it up? Also I've used JB Weld in the past--mostly because I could pick it up at the hardware store. Would it work ok on the aluminum or is there a better compound to use? Thanks for the help.

What action is it for?
I dont have any experiance with bedding blocks but I've done a few wood and composite stocks. I've used JB weld a few times and while I've found it to be satisfactory I prefer to use marine-tex. I belive it to be stronger and easier to work with. I buy the small package, mix it together and it is just enough to do one action.
Also I like the fact that I can go to any Ace Hardware or West Marine and pick some up. Make sure to get the "grey" and not the "white" I belive that the white isnt as hard as the grey.
From every thing I've read Devcon10110 is the best but it's a little harder to work with as far as mixing.
I'm sure other members will speak up about the best ways to do a bedding block

Do not mess with the bedding blocks already there. If you feel that you need to remove some of the stock to get in more bedding do so, but by leaving the bedding block it will draw back to original and the bedding will just lock it in place.

So the JB Weld is as good as anything?

While I've used it (once, when I was knee deep in a project, only to find out that I had run out of my normal stuff, and just didn't want to wait), it's not my first choice.

My go-to preference is Marine-Tex.

Easy to work with, and provides a first rate finished project.

Curious... why do you need to bed it?

I have a few. Bedded one to see if it made any measurable difference. I can't tell a difference in the before and after performance.

I now simply run the others as-issued, and can shoot sub-half-MOA with the unbedded guns.

You bed them for the same reason you bed anything else. Mass production doesn't make actions or bedding blocks as precision as you'd like to think or hope they are.

Rough up the bedding block real good. JB works fine.

Did you read what I wrote?

When I see no noticeable difference after actually trying it for myself, and am shooting sub-half- MOA anyway (in groundhog rifles), why go looking for projects?

That's great yours shoot that good. Did you read what I said? They don't all fit so well and some need it.

A little permatex prussian blue convinced me how well (not) an action sits in an HS block.
I used the 10110 and really liked it.

Im paranoid the devcon will chip out where it gets thin near the edges of the "V".

I leave a little aluminum around the bolt holes and wipe everything else out.
