Barreled action crooked in stock - Intentional?

OK,

I have a stock that I got a screaming deal on used. IT is a shirley bros laminated low rider. Funny thing is, the barrel channel is pointed distinctly to the left when viewed from the butt end. At the fore end, there appears to be ~ 1/8" more wood on the right side of the channel than on the left. The rear of the action appears to sit exactly in the middle of the stock.

Now the question: Is this done intentionally for some reason? I was going to open the barrel channel up for F-Open anyway (I'm a fan of cooling), and always planned to just straighten it out.

Am I thinking wrong? is there a reason to have it pointing to the left?

Thanks,
Keith

No. It should be as centered as the action inletting. That's probably exactly why you got a screamin deal on it. But since you planned on opening it up anyhow, it shouldn't be any trouble to you. Just take extra off the heavy side.

Make sure that you are not seeing a straight barrel channel with extra wood to the outside of one side. That may require some different work. A good 3 ft straight edge lined up perfectly with the edge of the action inletting on both sides will tell you for sure if the barrel channel is crooked or if there is extra wood on the outside. Good luck. I hope the stock serves you well. :)

The barrel channel is perfectly in line with the action inletting. The whole kit-n-kaboodle is pointed off to the left. My plan was to grind out the bedding and do bedding and all for this one. My only concern is the trigger guard inlet. If it's crooked, it might not be easy to fix and make pretty without making a custom trigger guard.

You could make a larger, oval shaped contrasting piece of wood to inlet into the guard area then inlet the guard in line with your newly aligned action.

could this be a stock offset to help with rotational torque ?

Nope. that's something totally different. This is about exactly as it states, a crooked barrel channel.

Here is a picture of what you do to the stock fore end to compensate for rotational torque.

I cut it out last night. It looks great now. I have to wait till I get all of the metal work done so I can do the bedding. That's going to be a bit, I have to wait another 6 weeks for the barrel and about a month after that for my turn at the gun plumber.

Thanks everyone
