Barreled action clamped to a bench

Engine block? How much whiskey was involved in this plan?
OMG, I see a huge argument brewing. Ford big or small block? Does MOPAR rule and Chevy drool in the "Gravel pit arms race?" Should I fill my cylinders with asphalt or cement? What happens if I melt lead into the cylinders...would boring .30 over help my lock time? Should I keep the intake on or replace it with an anvil? CAn a Caddy 500 make weight in the limited division?

:eek::D:D:D:p:p:p:po_O

I know a fellow that put a 7-08 in a vice because somebody told him it would kick like a mule...it busted the stock...lol
I thought he would have knowed better.

Kermit

PS...should have got a Creed...

We're talking torque here, it has to be Diesel!!

I have had several customers use a lead sled to sight in their rifles. Many of the higher recoil calibers have destroyed their scopes. I have seen $1000 scopes shaken apart. The action works just like a bullet puller works. It is the same reason a rifle scope cannot be used on an air rifle or crossbow. The recoil is different. I hope this helps.
Hoosier
..or worse. Had a friend who tried this with a big belled scope close to the barrel. They made violent contact - exit one scope.

OP,,just place the butt stock of your favorite target rifle against a concrete wall and pull the trigger and let us morons know what happend,,,Roger
I was 11yrs old, my buddy was 10yrs....... I had Me' Dad's old Stevens pump 12ga and my buddy was shooting his Dad's Charles Daly over and under.

We came back from grouse hunting and spotted a big ol' baldfaced hornet's nest up in a maple tree behind the chicken coop.

My buddy's Dad was a big-time flyway waterfowl hunter, progressive presses, patterning boards, buckets of buffering compound....... the whole 9 yards....... so my buddy had a couple long-range goose loads in his pocket "just in case".

Well here we were, "just"....."in"....."case"

Last minnit he decides he better back on UP, it's a long shot and he'll jus' hunker his shoulder bone tight up ag'in the chickenhouse wall for a steady rest aim....

How he kept that nice Daly from hitting the ground I'll never know ('cept DEATH awaited) but he curled up like he's been nut-kicked in the headbone, moanin' low......

Yup, the recoil's gotta' go somewhere.....

I think a good smooth free recoiling situation is about as good as it gets for this argument. No part of a rifle is designed to be shot that way. I haven't looked into rail guns at all but I suspect they work to handle the energy very efficiently. I hate when people dismiss an argument by saying "that is just silly", however, the amount and type of vibration that would take place would have all sorts of implications. Not too mention there is a difference if arguing theory between a lead sled type situation and 100 percent surface area contact as if firing the round from inside a 500lb heavy barrel. If these people are arguing that strapping their gun down to a lead sled or modified vise is going to help them with load development, they're going to be wasting their time at the very least...

Free recoil, grease up a tube slightly larger than the barrel, insert barrel, move target to aim point, pull trigger and let er fly.
