Barreled action clamped to a bench

Grimstod

Machinist, Designer, and Shooter.
Tell me. Why is it a bad idea to bolt your action to the bench? And prevent all recoil. Some fellas on another forum are talking about eliminating all human error by shooting consecutive shots with a gun bolted to a v8 engine block. They think that it will not move under recoil. Is this even a good idea? Every gun I have ever seen, even the supper heavy 100lb ones always have some sort of tracking system. ???

They must have skipped class when Newtons 3rd law was discussed. The shooting sports companies use machine rests for testing that allows the weapon to recoil and return to battery for a reason. One being that they return to battery :)
Those guys are suckered in by the Caldwell Lead Sled ad propaganda.

Lol.. perhaps they are trying to convince themselves something which they don't want to admit.

That even on proper rests and bags there is still a big element of shooter skill.... Now if this said engine block they bolted the rifle to would be able to slide on rails and also calculate when to fire based on the condition they might be onto something lol.

Yes, But would it make weight for LV class ?

Heavy Gun used to use super heavy 100-150 lbs guns, apparently 60 lbs guns work better.. I read an article that Bruce Baer explains why after you weigh the gun down so much it doesn't work.. Can't remember though

If being fixed were better, I think the military would have done something different than this.

raythemnaroe. if you could find that article it would be very helpful. I need a reputable source to sight on this to prove my point.

Look in the daily bulletin. Check under the big boomers. I believe it remains in the archive.

Go to the opening page and click on articles archive. Scroll down to 1000 yard heavy guns (big boomers)

?? Maybe a help

I suggest that there is absolutely no need to prove anything because the kind of fellows that come up with these sorts of ideas never actually do what they are discussing. It all ends up being hot air. Why worry about the opinions of fellows that think that they know things without testing? Just tell them to go ahead and build their engine block testing fixture, and that nothing will be proven until they do. It'll never happen.

OP,,just place the butt stock of your favorite target rifle against a concrete wall and pull the trigger and let us morons know what happend,,,Roger
