Barrel Support

Looking for opinions from anyone willing to offer.
I am in the process of building a .375 Cheytac. Barrel is a 32" Straight Blank at 1.750 Diameter. Action is a BAT Model L, 2" Round.

I personally feel this action will carry a barrel of this length and weight adequately and reliably, but as always, I originally go with my instincts, and then immediately second guess myself. Your advice will be much appreciated. Thanks

Sometimes when a barrel gets really long you have to engineer a support. This is one of my favorite designs.

Just kidding. I have been hanging 30" 1.25" barrels off of Remington 700s with no problem. The model EX would be Bat's recommendation for that barrel. But the L should work fine. It is pretty beefy too.

As I see it you have 3 options:

1. Use it as is, see if you have problems. This would be my choice.

2. Switch to the EX. Probably a reason why you didn't buy this action in the first place.

3. Go to a sleeved action design--you'll need a crane to get it on the rest. Here is my favorite design for an action sleeve.

Just kidding again.

Good luck with your build.

Is it the 10 inch X 2 inch BAT?

What started this many years ago was Dan Lilja had a barrel on close out, 1.650 taper to 1.450 at 30 " that I bought. Then I remembered this guy in ID. who was making a big action. I have a single digit serial number BAT L. I would put some taper on the barrel. Like 1.500" on the muzzle.

Howdy !

Use a barrel block, and float the action ?

Roll your own...

Well... maybe not like this.

I have done it both ways as mentioned above:

Use or taper a barrel.

Build and use a barrel block.

I have never been able to detect or quantify any real difference between the two techniques at least at the ranges I shoot. I will say that your barrel should be cut-rifled if you feel that you want to have it tapered. Dave may disagree.

There are a bunch of shooters running 30" - 32" barrels for F-Class without barrel blocks but those barrels are usually 1.250" or less. Yours might be just a tad heavier...;)

Have fun no matter what you choose!

Thankyou to everyone for your responses!!! Through deep thought, with all of your suggestions taken into account, I'm going to go with my instinct and float the barrel. The barrel is heavy, but so is the action. I guess if I have issues down the road I'll block it. Once again, thanks!!

The stuff that Gerald Bull came up with really made the above look small !

My 30", 1.730" dia. 6.5mm barrel weighs in at 18.5# on my bathroom scale. I'm guessing yours will come in around ~19# (being longer but larger chamber/bore).
That seems like a lot of weight to hang off that tennon.

I put mine in a 9" barrel block & the action floats (round BAT L). I assume the block also helps keep the barrel whip down...? 375's gonna be a big bang when it
goes off.

I know many consider this heresy but, another option is to bed under the barrel near the action. Several of my BR rifles have the first 1.5-3" of barrel bedded for support.
Nobody can tell me it doesn't work, two different rifles have set NBRSA 600 & 1000 yard records (one still standing).

Wish I could make up my mind on the subject. Would be a superb item for Varmint Al to explore via computer simulation.
