Barrel indexing ring(for engraving)

Any interest in a ring that can be marked so you know where the engraving goes on a new barrel, without the action in hand?

It would just screw onto the old barrel first, where you'd use a marker to mark on the ring, where the engraving needs to go on the new barrel. You'd then just screw it on the new barrel and engrave it where the mark is. Make sense?

I've got a couple that I've made for myself but a one off of anything just costs more than making several.

I'm thinking I can make and sell them for $20-$30 each, if there is enough interest.

If you'd be interested, let me know here.

Thanks!--Mike

I've seen times that having a few of each would be nice. Just take critical dimensions from customer's barrel, along with a dedicated index ring for engraving...and send the old barrel home with the owner.

Sharpie is what I use now. Just aggravating when it gets wiped off and you don't want it
I guess you could scribe a line and the customer's initials by the line. It would work many times before it gets full. Lol! I get what you're saying but it only has to be there for a little while. Other than using something that doesn't rub off so easy, I don't really have a better answer than the marker. A paint drop maybe.

This is what I'm wanting to hear. Keep'em coming.

Yea, I've been meaning to breakout the Dremel tool next time I use it
The idea of a nice tool with laser numbered hash marks around it
Is something I would buy
Tim, permanent marks wouldn't seem to be useful unless you replace the tool as needed. What am I missing? If that's what's needed, I can make them that way. I'm just missing the point,.

I"m not a gunsmith but I can see Tim's point. If it was numbered, you could just write down the number where the engraving goes, and not have to worry about wiping off your mark. Might add more than the price of a sharpie to the price though
I'm basing it on my experience with them and had never given a thought to index marks, as they just don't seem useful for someone using the tool for many barrels, but I get it now. Yes, it will add to the price if I go that route.

Thanks for your feed back. That's what I need to hear.

I was just picturing numbers all the way around it. Then if you were doing a lot of barrels. Once you check the original barrel and record the number
Jim bobs Bat is at #4
Joe bobs Panda is at #6

Maybe I'm just off in my thinking. I usually have to make things harder than they are

I put a few thread checkers in my spin indexer, then put #’s on them....... just shoulder it up and write down the #’s that line up with where you want to engrave for future markings.
If your tennon length stays the same on future barrels your #’s will be good.

I think they would sell Mike!
