Barrel indexing ring(for engraving)

I put a few thread checkers in my spin indexer, then put #’s on them....... just shoulder it up and write down the #’s that line up with where you want to engrave for future markings.
If your tennon length stays the same on future barrels your #’s will be good.

I think they would sell Mike!

I'm gonna have to try it for myself. I'm still having trouble getting my head around needing permanent marks, but I'm open to it.

I was just picturing numbers all the way around it. Then if you were doing a lot of barrels. Once you check the original barrel and record the number
Jim bobs Bat is at #4
Joe bobs Panda is at #6

Maybe I'm just off in my thinking. I usually have to make things harder than they are
Tim, I try to keep things as simple as they can be without giving up function. It sometimes works and sometimes, not so much.

I do the same Keith...I made a mark every 10 degrees I think and numbered them. Got a chart I write everything down on...

Looks like you made yours from a BAT and Panda tenons?

Now that makes sense. Thanks for posting. I hadn't thought of using a chart or simply noting the location and corresponding reference mark. Great idea! Maybe I'm just slow but now I see the value in permanent markings on the ring.

Yea it needs marks all the way around like they said. You can note a bat gets it at 3.5 and tyrones hall gets marked at 4.5 and so on. I think mine has 10 numbers and half marks. That way you dont even have to have the barrel after the first time. Mine are homemade from steel billet drops so id love to have a new set of each pitch if they had good permanent marks

I made several years ago, I stamped numbers all the way around. Every action I did a barrel for, I recorded where the lettering should be, along with all the other measurements. It's fool proof.

Yep I had them so figured I’d use them for something else too...... I made a few others as well.

Mike...if you make them...make sure there is an adequate counterbore. Also...maybe make the other end open to depth mic tenon length and headspace if one chooses. If you make it open, obviously both surfaces need to be parallel.

I use mine to check headspace and bolt nose clearance as well as locating my engraving position.

I have that, or something very similar. I made it years ago, maybe before there were digital indicators...but I use a digital indicator on it now and it just slips over the tenon, rather than threading on. But I like it!

Digital makes it nice if you have a barrel that came off to compare. Just stick the hs gage in the old barrel and zero the indicator. Same with cone. Works great.

Maybe I should make those. Just looking for something simple and handy to do that will make a little money while keeping me busy and out of trouble. Lol!
