Barrel diameter

Can someone help me? I'm trying to find the diameter of a Savage Small Shank barrel at the bottom of the threads. In other words if I machined the threads off a small shank Savage barrel what would the remaining diameter be?

1.119 if I remember right. Larry

Thanks, I'm looking to rebarrel an old Mossberg 800B. I've used old Remingtom barrels, but recently saw a Savage barrel in the caliber I want. If memory serves 1.10 is sufficient.

1st - 7mm-08
2nd - 243
3rd - 260rem

I'm going to cut it to 14.5" and pin a break on it. Load light projectiles and use it for varmint hunting.

Do you have something else that would fit my intended purpose? I'm not set on those three. I was also considering a 223 barrel and chambering a 5.56X42. Just looking for something that I can load light bullets in and still run fairly fast from a 16" barrel.

Bolt face is a problem for that caliber .

There is a gunsmith here in town that fills them in with a titanium ring and adds a side extractor. I had him convert a 300WSM to a 243. It worked well.

I have a switch barrel out in the shop waiting for customer to pick it up. I'll measure the loose barrel for you shortly. What is the thread on the Mossberg?
Ken

Outside thread diameter is 1" on the Mossberg. Not sure what it is to the bottom of the threads. It is threaded 28 TPI.

Just measure the ID of a receiver , I'm sorry , I forgot to measur when in the shop , I'll get my ice cream after I measure , give me a minute .

If the major diameter is 1.055" and there are 28 threads per inch, and we're talking 100% thread engagement for a "full profile" thread(which is very doubtful), the minor diameter calculates to 1.009".

ive measured the I d of 2 receivers , 1.010 and 1.016 . Now theses are factory fresh receiver id. Which should give you barrel minor diam . But I've had a rough day .

What I think you are asking for is the minor thread diameter which is based on TPI. In your case, there are 20 TPI. The basic thread depth for any diameter that is threaded with 20 TPI is about .032 per side..so double that giving .064". You'll have approximately .991" when the old threads are cleaned up. This number can vary a little with class fit and the tooling used to cut the thread. Also, if you need it to be a little bigger..say 1.000, you can do it by threading through what is left of the old thread after turning to 1.000.

The barrel I took off my 810A 30-06 Mossberg was 28 TPI, 1" outside diameter of the threads. I spun a take off Remington on it and the threads were completely gone by the time we cut the shank small enough to fit the receiver. I think the Remington barrels are 1.060 outside thread and 1.018 when there were no threads left.

Minor diameter of a 1" x 28 t.p.i. thread (at full profile, 100%) is .9536" (calculated).
