Barrel diameter

The basic formula for inch threads (verses metric threads); minor diameter = major dia. - (.01299 x % of thread desired / t.p.i.) example; minor diameter= 1.0" - (.01299 x 100[%] = 1.299 divided by 28 [t.p.i.]) the minor diameter is .953"

Having trouble following this thread but the theoretical minor diameter using simple trigonometry for a 60 degree thread is the minor diameter = major diameter - 1.5/TPI. Shortgrass uses 1.299 which seems a little light to me. Are you sure you're not using a formula for stress diameter? The stress diameter is slightly higher because the thread are a helix rather than a circle.

for the original question of what will be the diameter that you have to machine a small shank savage action to remove the thread, the smallest diameter would be 1.055 - 1.5/20 = .980".

I think all the answers are within savage barrel thread specs . Some will clean up larger than others . I'm not sure what savages tolerances are but either way the op should be ale to rethread to a 1" Mossberg even if some orig savage thread remnants exist .
