barrel cooling

I use a small air pump and a 12v battery pack. In 90° weather I can usually fire a round every minute and the barrel will never get too hot to hold. 45 seconds with air blowing down the barrel from the chamber cools as well as 8-10 minutes with the barrel facing up and the bolt open.

I read a gizmo that worked similar to this in an old copy of Precision Shooting several years back, (trying to remember the details). It had a cartridge case for the particular rifle that had been drilled and tapped through the web/flash hole to accept a fitting with an air hose attached to it. The other end of the air hose was attached to a bottle of compressed gas (oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, I don't remember which). The high velocity of the compressed gas rapidly cooled the barrel from the inside out.

It works well and is only about $25 minus the 12v power source. An old battery, jumper box or a vehicle close by will work depending where you are shooting from. The Coleman low pressure / high volume pump comes with a cigarette lighter plugin but it could be cit odd and a pair of alligator clips attached. I use a heavy walled soft flexible poly tube that will fit into the action and attach it to one of the adapters on the pump. I also use a clamp on 12v fan attached to my shooting table to cool me. It's harder to shoot with your eyes full of sweat and the glasses steamed up.

This subject comes up mostly in the spring. But, every time it comes up a new idea is posted and that's great. I've been using a fish tank pump from Walmart, clear hose, (of appropriate diameter) attached to an old bore cleaning guide. Works great. The ongoing expense with this is the batteries the pump uses.

Does this has to be plugged in to run or does it has a rechargeable battery?

When I used to shoot IHMSA pistol, we would carry a spray pump bottle full of isopropyl alcohol/water mix, and spray it down the barrel after each target set.
Now when shooting prairie dogs, I use a Barrelcool fan.

It has to be plugged into a vehicle or a 12v battery or battery pack. I'm using this jumper box I got at TSC for about $45. There are probably smaller and less expensive units that will work although this one isn't that big and it has the 12v plug in the back side for the pump. If it were only used for this purpose, the 2 clamps and cables could be removed.

Water down the bore works very well. I do not use ice water but just water. Even warm to the touch water works well. The towel is also a good option.

so like 2 shots into a match in the summer and your indicator goes off, what do you do at that point?
Ha Ha Dusty,
In takes about 20 rounds to get the barrel hot depending on the contour. The temp strip just shows the actual temp. If you not concerned about your barrel temp, you won’t need a strip that instantly lets your know your actual barrel temp in about 10 degree increments.

Dusty, how about I send you a free removable temp strip so you an try it out and then post the results. If you are interested in trying one, sent me a a PM with your address and I will mail you a couple. Picture of strip below.

Ive got some telatemps and such but in my game i dump em all downrange when the wind is right no matter what the temp is- cant be concerned with something i have no control over. I cool after i clean between relays, but i really do appreciate the offer. If i was on my own time not in a match just banging steel or pasture pups that is a great idea because i do lose track of time.

I routinely use water to cool and clean my barrels when varminting. I follow up with a few patches to dry the bore. A lot of fouling is removed with the process. All that's required is a bore guide, a small funnel and a vinyl hose to connect the two.

I have a friend/neighbor that stuffs his barrel in a five gallon bucket of water,I guess it works for him. He as been known not to be running on all eight cylinders ......lol
