Barrel heating and cooling

I know a smith who put a copper tube down the bore and circulated water through it with a small pump and bucket of water. Said it would cool the barrel in 5 minutes.

What you need is a frozen cleaning rod to run into the bore and let it sit.

Awesome guys thanks for the ideas! I'm sure I'll be testing a few of them to so which works the best for me.

Has anyone used one of the infra red laser thermometers to see what temps their barrels are reaching at the end of a string?

Yes I have. It works.

ok, what kind of temps do you see?

and better yet how hot is too hot?

i have tried all the rigs mentioned above and even though the CO2 is probably faster i keep returning to a plain old wet towel.

My rifle sits upright in a Plano case between strings. I have a gel-pack that is 6"x18" that leaves the house frozen in a cooler.

Pull the bolt and place it on the chamber end of the barrel after my relay and it cools it down in 5-10 minutes. When finished it goes back in its own cooler with some other frozen gel packs to get cold again.

Like Roland says, firing quickly during an F-class string is pretty normal and hot barrels are to be expected.
