barnard action survey

I have two Barnard model P rifles with factory V blocks and have seen a lot more with V blocks, they don’t need changing.

I accept that there is no accuracy difference between the v-block and traditional pillar bedding. I think that pillar bedding is antiquated technology though. The use of a v-block allows for a modular interchangeability of actions which results in a huge cost savings if one has multiple barreled actions to shoot.

I would not build a rifle today that is not compatible with a v-block . That means that just about any round action could be a good candidate. Whidden Gunworks makes a v-block for the Rem700. I almost built all my rifles on Bat actions (round actions) but they did not have a v-block available to purchase. I could have paid someone to custom make a v-block for a Bat but there are too many other good options out there to go to that trouble.

P.S. whidden Gunworks also makes an adaptator plate that allows one to swap the Stolle Panda which is a flat bottom action. The point is, there is a movement towards a modular interface between action and stock rather than the old school pillar bedding.

Pictures and specs please.

What specifically would you like pics and specs for? I don’t have a rifle with a Rem700 or a Panda modular adapter.

The only item that I currently own is a Barnard with a v-block that I can post if needed.

Thanks,

was looking for the widden thingy, does it take a flat panda inlet and allow you to place a round action into it

or just a bedding block for the panda flat action into any stock? Jeff

The Barnard v-block is unique. The block and actions are machined precisely and a drill bushing is used to accept the fitted bolt head used as a recoil lug. Its not your normal v-block. I do not think they would give anything up to a conventional bedding job and are certainly the best example of a v-block. A factory action thats not machined precisely on the OD and a mass produced one size fits all v-block is quite different, and has many faults over a bedding job. A good bedding job will show under .001" deflection when torquing action screws and will not bend an action or allow inconsistent recoil lug contact.

What if the v block is aluminum and the action is steel? Will point of aim be different in Arizona, the weekend after Pennsylvania match?

The Barnard works so well with a V Block because they're ground true after heat treating, some other actions MAY work with a V Block but usually depends on the individual action. Remington wouldn't be a great choice IMO, some will work but most wont. I've built 100's of F Class, LRBR and TR rifles using Barnard actions and have never pillar/glass bedded one, all have sat in a V Block.

Whidden uses it to mate a Panda to a Anschütz Precise stock. I presume that it can be glued into a conventional stock and serve the same purpose.

Perhaps a factory Rem700 would not be a perfect choice for v-block due to OD inconsistency. But what about the dozens of the custom actions that are built with a Rem700 footprint?

If the outside of the action is true, a v block will work, it really depends on when the outside of the action has it's final finishing done. If it's after heat treating it should be fine.

I have a Barnard P action that I would like to use for an F-open build and was wandering if those that use a Barnard action, do you use a v block or do you use a recoil lug when bedding the action? Is there any advantage to either method ? Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
