Baiting coyotes what is the best way?

Baiting has never worked so well for me. Haven't done it a bunch, but when we did, it just seems like they're a lot better at showing up when we're not there than when we are.

Just because there is a tasty treat in a spot doesn't mean that they will give up standard coyote protocol, and throw caution to the wind. I've never had night vision tech to use, and I imagine that will help.

As far as cows go, I've seen dead cows lay undisturbed until they turned to jerkey after the butt-hole and guts were gone. I don't think they are toward the top of the list for coyote cuisine.

Old trapper technique called for a dead horse, killed in a spot with several converging draws and travel routes. Then set traps on the routes traveled to and from the carcass. jd

I think baiting would work well with some strategically placed snares around the bait. The snares work 24/7 so if the coyotes come in for a late dinner or early breakfast the snares may get them.

Dead cow is a great idea. Didn’t think about that. I’ll ask around and let farmers know I’m in the deceased cow hauling off business. Happy new year.

I see logistical and transportation problems with this. I suppose if you have a pickup truck it would work....but how are you going to get a dead cow in and out of the truck bed. And if it's just an SUV..you don't want that cow inside.

Most ranchers/farmers have tractors, lots of hunters have 4wheelers or sxs. I don't see the problem. :)

The answer..............and possible issues with such, in the signature line below.:)

Having been in the cow business since I was born, can't see a cowman giving away dead cattle and especially delivering them. We bury them quickly to avoid buzzards and possible contagious disease. If you want to draw trap shy and caller shy coyotes in there is nothing better than the real thing. Put a puppy in a GOOD dog box and set it out there. When that puppy starts squalling they WILL come to him.....

I got the bait pile started with deer bones.

I thinks it’s illegal to hunt with live animals and I wouldn't do that to a puppy. At least that’s what I’m saying on line.
“Moo” ving (pun intended) a cow is not an issue. Got a Kobota CTL with forks too.

I believe the dog squealing works. A fellow trained his dog to squeal and has brought coyotes in from the squeals. I don't know if there is a call that mimics dog squeals?
Drags

I put out dry dog food ( I think Alpo brand) I bought from Dollar General and they would not get near it. Only a fox would eat it. These dogs are smart and wary. Been raining like crazy and I ll check tomorrow on the guy pile.

They found the bone pile. Ate or dragged everything off. I was not in the stand. Rain and other stuff going on. I put the word out about a cow. Maybe I’ll get a call.

That is exactly the luck I've had. They are very good at showing up to feed, when I'm not there to kill em. jd

+1^^

Coyotes are masters at showing up to bait when no one is set up over it. After trying a multitude of different sized "baits", including deceased small cattle. Of all of them, road killed rabbits, raccoons, squirrels, and deer worked best, but I concluded that it doesn't matter how big the bait is, the real trick is to figure out when they will show up and be there.... and good luck with that.
