Baiting coyotes what is the best way?

we have some coyotes around and I’d like to hunt/ kill one or more. I’d like to hunt them from a deer stand that is 16’ to the floor. I have a thermal so I can do this at night. Question is: where to place the bait. (Deer scrap) in the woods a ways or in a more open area. Both places are about 110 yds to 140 yds.

I would not place in the woods. Your thermal will be blocked
If your rifle is sighted in at 100yds. Then place it in a more open place
about 100yds away or the 140 and know what your holdover is for 140yds.
Shouldn't be much unless your shooting a 22lr

Thanks ranger. The “woods” is just a pocket of trees and I was thinking they may feel more comfortable in the woods/ cover. The deer like to keep to the woods/ cover. I suppose coyote like a more open area.

It dont matter. They will go wherever. They only use woods to conceal theirself when they can. Put it in the open.

Curious what your baiting with... never baited coyotes or heard of it.

I use road killed deer must be staked to the ground, works best when it is cold, I can see the deer from my house with lights just over 100 yds. best luck after 3:00 am.

Make sure you are Not upwind of the bait or their approach trails. In my area deer, beef, beaver, muskrat, pork in that order of draw and holding quality. Pigs need to be opened up in freezing weather.

I have a processor that has saved me some deer carcass (now frozen). Not sure about legal. I’ll ask. Thanks. My buddy killed a coyote while deer hunting last week in the area. He said he saw three. I hear them in the evenings when a siren goes by. Ambulance.
I would think a deer fastened to the ground would bring them in after dark. The box stand is covered and comfortable so I can sit for a while.

Calling them in might be quicker.
Never thought of baiting

Not sure if it's legal in my area either. But I HEARD a story
of a guy that found a road kill deer and placed in a field (farmer wanted the coyotes dead) about 100 yds away from a down wind
and covered area. Heard he went their in the mornings and on the 3 morning
a dog was setting over it eating away. Well you can guess what happened next.
It does work...

Idk if there are poultry farms nearby but if there are make friends and get the dead chickens every day and dump them in the same place every day
They don’t haul them off very far and you will soon have a pile of bones

I am planning on using a fresh bucket of kentucky fried chicken.

Hell I can smell that stuff a mile away.

Cant call em for nuthin, they are smart to it now.

Dry dog food. It's too small to pick up and tote off and too good to pass it by. If you want to use a strong smell to pull them in, put some meat in a glass one gallon jar in the sun with a little water. Leave it there until it becomes a rotten, stinking liquid. Sprinkle it around the dog food.

One other thing I did, I mean I heard someone do.
Knew of a meat packing place and got pig parts that were not
going t be used.
Placed in a 5 gallon bucket (wintertime)and a little water, freezes up.
Dump in a good spot, to heavy and frozen to haul away but will draw them
in cause of the smell and pieces that they can bite at.

Dead cow is a great idea. Didn’t think about that. I’ll ask around and let farmers know I’m in the deceased cow hauling off business. Happy new year.

I see logistical and transportation problems with this. I suppose if you have a pickup truck it would work....but how are you going to get a dead cow in and out of the truck bed. And if it's just an SUV..you don't want that cow inside.

Most ranchers/farmers have tractors, lots of hunters have 4wheelers or sxs. I don't see the problem. :)
