Bait cast reel vs a Spinning reel

So I took a head count
6 of each
3 Abu Garcia 6500 C3 for trolling, plunking, drift fishing for salmon, my 3 lowpro reels I fish light line and wide open 9'6"- 10'6" rod
I can cast a 1/4oz and stay in the run with these combos as I freespool when fishing the river, something not easily done with a spinning out fit.
Spinning 5 Quantum Smokes, 2 are inshore reals, couple are set up for side drifting, couple set up for bobber dogging from a drift boat yet can cast a weightless slugo with ease.
1 Shimano Stridac on a 10' G-Loomis IMX my favorite spinning combo for steelhead and smaller, it's twin is a 10'6" IMX with a Shimano Castallic.
Both are fished with 8# line

We in the south call spinning reels "Yankee poles" !
It seems the guys up there use them for everything.
I use bait casters all the time. At one time i was trying to be a Simi pro. $$$$$
Then i started shooting for fun $$$$$
WTH is wrong with me ?????

Buddy runs his charter service up here in Erie. Early season
small mouth then it's walleye. I think the amount of Penn
caster/trolling reels he has in his collection is worth more
then his boat.....LOL

I do land based fishing and have for many years. I have fished from Nantucket to Florida. One of my hobbies is finding older Abu reels and rebuilding them with ceramic bearings and other upgrades, this gives new life to the casting of the Abu. While Bait casters are not for everyone and I have my Masters degree in removing "bird nests" I love the looks I get from the spin casting crowd when I stand next to them casting from the beach. Casting long with a Bait caster is not for the impatient! There is a point when casting light baits a Bait caster is out of the question (at least in salt water) so I own a few Spinning reels but my Bait casters out number them.

This ABU 6000 is in mint condition. Have not yet given her the modern up grades but her day is comming

One of my favorite Abu reels were the little black ones Cabela’s used to have sales on for $50 bucks. I liked them so much I’d give them to friends for Christmas. I converted a few. My Dad was a dyed in the wool fly fisherman. He’d sneer at my spinning reels. He accepted my use of bait casters. The only time he wouldn’t use a fly rod was when we went smallmouth fishing with “Minnie’s”. Then, it had to be a bait caster.

Recently I won a new Abu 6500LC(electronic) on an auction. First time out, trolling walleye, I get a bite, set the hook and the reel pops out of the reel seat and drops into 12' of water(nice smooth lightly set drag). I had to pull off 100' of 12# mono, before the line slipped around the handle allowing me to actually lift the reel.off the bottom. Used rice and the little silica gel packs to dry out the board/display. Had to tear down clean out sand and relube the gears and drive. Still on the bench in the basement, worried it might be jinxed.

A little ABU history.......Pre WWII ABU made watches. This shows up in there older fishing reels. Internal work of art they can be modified with newer technology to cast like a dream if you understand a bait caster. I have had spinning reel casters approach me and ask how do you do that. But again dont rule out your bird nest training!

If my memory serves me correctly you can get upgraded drag washers for that reel. It would preform under water. Remember surf fishing guys cast from the suds so there reels get wet.

Bait cast for 90% of my fishing (river, lake/pond & ocean). Don't forget the cane pole for perch, no reel required. :)

Cecil, these are yours if would like them. 850 eight one four thirty-six ninety Buckey
Hello Castaway. You have a great collection of very good reels. The only reels in your collection would be the "Mag Elite" and they show some heavy mileage. Just saying no offence intended. Send me closer picks maybe we can talk. The internals of the Mag Elite are very intrecite as there is two anti back lash systems. The Mag Elite is very much worth the upgrade. Here is a pic of my 6500 I purchased from a Salmond fisherman in the UK. It has all the Mods , I use it for bucktails in the inlets down here.

Ive learned that fly fishing should be called fly casting...
Hello Snert , Friends of mine fly fish from the surf they are called "bucket bellies" and NO ONE wants to be near them as line control is important in the waves.....can you say tangled up. Not for me!
