Baddest short action caliber

I just ran the numbers and the 308 caliber 180 Elite by Berger, if leaving the barrel at 2650 fps, at 3000 ft. elevation is still traveling 1877 fps at 600 yds. I would rather shoot a 180 Berger at elk than a 147 Eld-m, but that is personal preference of course.

The dead elk won't know the difference either way. Thinking you could actually get 2750 from a 308 with that elite hunter bullet.

Yeah I have been wondering what velocity could be had with that bullet too. On a different forum guys have been getting close to that speed with the 185's over 2000mr.

There is a LONG overlooked cartridge that made a splash "more than a few years ago".. Large caliber, excellent bullets will cause tremendous tissue destruction, which causes loss of blood and a quick death. The cartridge I am espousing here is a wildcat BUT very easy to make. Just buy the new "Shiraz Norma" .284 brass, neck it up to .338 and fireform it is a .338-.284 Shehane chamber. Shoot the 210 Nosler powered by either RL-16 or possibly RL-23 somewhere in the vicinity of 2700f.p.s. That should put the hurt on an Elk out to a comfortable 300+ yards. Large caliber bullets tear up lots of tissue. Large caliber bullets with the excellent characteristics of the long proven Nosler Partition, leave little doubt of their effectiveness!

I pushed 185 vlds around 2700-2725 easily with a 26" barrel. Temps were warm but elevation was only 4000 ft. 180s would do 2750

I don't think you can back any more whop into a SA than a 6.5 SAUM. If you're going 0-600 the 7s are probably your Huckleberry. 284 or 6.5x284 aren't in my top 20 picks.

They would be if your bolt face was limited to a 308 as in the OP.
It not limited, gunsmith open the most up and put in Sako extractors all the time. In fact the Sako is a stronger extractor then the Rem and opening up the bolt allows the gunsmith to true the bold face. Both are better things. Matt

With gunsmiths, the sky's the limit really. Based on a .473 bolt face was the question. Assuming maybe he wanted a switch barrel rifle in that biolt face. Kinda tough to swap Remington bolt faces or Sako when needed.
