Axis vs Axis ll

Axis and Axis II are the same. Note that recent production now has 8-40 tapped receivers vs the older 6-48.
All Axis actions are long actions.

Thanks!! Gun came with a POS 1 inch 3x9 somethinorother. I have a few high end 30mm scopes with pic rings on them. just need to swap out the base.

Nothing like a $300.00 gun with a $1700.00 scope on it. it's like the $2,000.00 pickup with the $19,000.00 sled in the back!!

Long and short actions are available in the Axis.
I think all the actions are the same, just different stock and mags. Maybe a bolt stop but not sure ? I have one in 270 and just bought one in 7-08, and owned a few others. Every Axis I have had would get sub MOA easily with hand loads.

Long and short action cartridges are available. The receiver, however is long action only, I believe. Different size spacer for bottom metal and mags.
...I've been wrong before, sorry if I misled.
Also, the EGW pictinny base comes with both 6-48 and 8-40 screws now.

Dave is indeed correct about action length, because I just remembered I used a 1 piece rail from an Axis in 270 on the 7-08 I just bought.

For those that haven't seen it yet, this is the Axis firing pin a spring setup. It's a mess and I've seen a few already that completely fail to fire. They must've carried it over to the 111 series for at least a while as I had one in the shop with the same setup and same problem. We're talking virtually brand new guns. Not all of the new ones have it. Not sure if they saw the light and trashed the idea altogether or just on some models.
2 springs wound opposite directions and a spacer in between. Sounds good in principle but it's proving to be a poor design

When I ordered one for an Axis II, the serial nr. was used to select the correct one.

  • Please note that as of 9/2021, Savage Arms has altered the drill hole pattern on newly manufactured Savage Axis models. Check the serial number on your rifle. For models manufactured before 9/2021 (Serial numbers below N936371), purchase the old Pre 9/2021 compatible mount. For models manufactured after 9/2021 (Serial numbers above N936371), purchase the new Post 9/2021 compatible mount.

actions and stocks are the same - the trigger guard and magazine determine whether its a long or short "action"

My Axis II over watch 7mm-08 has the dual springs and Grimstod's kit help a lot on this one. I looked for this model for years and finally found it on Bud's a month ago and it's coming along very well.

FWIW, I called Savage and described the problem. The tech claimed that they might've seen it on occasion but not enough to call it a problem. I let him know that it was all over the internet and that maybe they should look into it. I ordered a few sets of springs and low and behold, they had changed one of the springs significantly. It's quite a bit stiffer but I haven't checked actual spring rates yet. But..it fixed the problem!

So are you seeing parts/springs break or just failing to strike the primer hard enough to fire? I dont have an axis, but I do have a mod 11 I kind of like. I will have to check mine to see if it has the same setup

Light strikes, on virtually new guns. I started by just cleaning the bolt thoroughly but the problem reappeared soon after. The new spring seems(again) to have fixed the problem..but time will tell. No idea why they got away from the proven system they had unless it was to lighten bolt lift and make bolt function a bit smoother with the springs wound in opposite directions.
