Savage axis

I did reduced recoil loads for a young shooter last fall . she has an axis in 308 . my opinion is the rifle is cheap . when working the bolt it is very rough . the trigger is very heavy it's right at 6 lbs , if I remember correctly . it's barrel heavy . but the bugger did shoot well for a rifle at that price . Jim

my target .

her target . I made a scope adjustment , so this is 2 groups of 3 shots .

mine is in 22-250 and is basically shooting moa... With handloads i am able to shoot 3/4 minute but i haven't done very much load development. the rifle is light weight and if you beat it up who cares!!?.. The stock trigger is heavy. I was able to adjust it down to 3.5lbs by putting a new spring in from ace hardware, then i bought the timney for it and it dropped it down to 2 pounds 2 ounces. i like these guns for what they are. oh, i also took a little sandpaper and sanded the stock down to get ample clearance to make sure the barrel was free. i have found my gun to be a very fun toy simply because it is a decent shooter i'm not stressed about cleaning/scratching/breaking anything on it.

Got my son one in a .243 and a 24x scope. Loaded up some rounds and after breaking it in and sighting it in, he shot two groups under half MOA at 100. He also shot a fox at 297 yards with it. We are happy with it for what it is.

They're decent guns, but the Stevens 200 is a much better product for about the same price. The Stevens is a Savage 10/110 action with a different name. Aftermarket barrels, triggers, stocks etc will fit a Stevens. They are very accurate, the action and trigger are better out of the box and you have tons of options if you choose to mod it at all.

I think they are pretty awesome little pieces. I have 3 at my house they are the backup guns or beater guns for me and kids. I have a .223, .243, and a 308. they all shoot 1" or less @ 100 yards with hornaday superformance ammo. I will say this for a new hunter or if someones gun goes down it's a cheap affective backup. and you can't get a better DBM rifle with a scope for anywhere close to that money.

her scope failed quickly . I mounted a 3-9 prostaff for her . I did keep the specs for her rifle . it weighs 7.5 lbs with a 3-9 prostaff scope . the trigger was 6 pounds even . Jim

I'm still wanting to get one in .308, drop in a rifle basics trigger and be ready to roll. Lot's of people dis the synthetic stocks but my Stevens .223 will shoot with the best of them as far as I'm concerned.

Hey James, thanks for posting this. Yes, I have registered and am on here prowling around. I am .260 James' brother.

The replies are about what I was thinking. Looking for a beater/user that is cheap to shoot and accurate enough to hit with. Been searching for a old Hunter Class or ? in 6BR, but for the money, one of these in .243 will do the same as well as whack a coyote or Pronghorn as necessary.

Wonder if it will look funny with a Zeiss on top ?

Anybody have any experience with the Savage axis model, just wondering if its worth $300.00 for a truck gun!!!!! :)

In my opinion the best buy at the moment.
But the trigger must be adjusted by a qualified gunsmith to about 32 oz.

The magazine works great and the body is made of metal
The action is a prooven savage action
The stock is made well and with pillars
The safety button is centered like on all savage
Picarails are available from EGW or it`s possible to mount two Rem700 front bases

I only miss a bolt lock in the safe condition and a larger tactical bolt handle would be great.

I have a 223 Rem (9" twist) - have shortened the barrel to 18" and reach about 1/2 - 1 MOA groups with 69grain Match bullets and 60grain AERO copper bullets.
I`ve mounted a cheap Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40 with BDC reticle. Great scope for this cheap rifle and with the BDC reticle it`s also possible shoot and hit on longer distances.

I bought the first one for a truck gun......now I own 5.... I love them....they all shoot better than my 700's. Also look at the Stevens 200.

my 308 shoots .85moa straight out of the box, i have a timney trigger on order so i wonder how much better this will make it.
I have long ranged killed at plus 400m

Not to go too far off topic but---look at OP first pix of the target-a politician is giving away targets with his name and a "vote for me" ad. How GREAT is that!

We could use about 535 more of these. 100in the Senate and the remainder in the House.

Forget the rifle-support the man who cares enough to give away targets and support the 2nd A.

If you spend a little more you can get an Axis with the Savage Acutriger. Add a decent scope and away you go.
