Athlon Ares etr gen2 15x60

My Ares doesn't say anything about Gen 2 on either the box nor on the scope itself, but it does have illumination & the large wheel intended for field use so you can put tape around the wheel and write your own parallax/range info on it. Since I've got mine on a Vudoo RT bolt/left port V22S, I can't use the wheel. But I really like the scope...sharp & clear, good definite clicks on the knobs.

Athlon Ares ETR GEN2 UHD 10-60x56
Gen 1 #212108
Gen 2 #212117

I`m late to the party here, but this is what my findings are after buying the Gen 2
Friend of mine has the Gen 1, he let me compare his Gen 1 to my Gen 2

Cleaner crisper glass (i have no idea what they did with the glass, but it IS, better, vs the Gen 1)
Better Turrets (only the windage knob is locking, the elevation knob, does not have push-pull lock)
The Gen 2 turrets feel much better, and the knobs are easier to grip-n-rip. Yup, loud clickies for you tackies.

Does come with the Big Wheel for the parallax, and 3" sunshade. (parallax less sensitive than Gen 1)
Comes with metal screw-in flip up lens covers. (you can position them where you want once installed)
No throw lever, just a tall screw in post on the power ring. (i don`t know if Gen1 lever would fit it or not)
The scope is calibrated at 40x (red 40x numbers on the power ring) yet still very good at 60x

F-Class John (in youtube) did a video not long ago on the Gen 1. He gave the Gen 1 high praise.
Be great if he did a review of the Gen 2 to hear his opinion on it.

My only dislikes, the illuminated reticle, it only lights up the tiny floating dot. And if you have astigmatism, like i do, don`t even bother installing the battery for it. It will turn into a starburst on you.

With a very small increase in price over the Gen 1, BUY THE GEN 2, it IS, better, than the Gen 1

Here`s F-class John`s review video. If i`m not allowed to post it, mods can remove it.

Yup. Forgot about lens covers. Extra cool. They will flap all the way over in increments and lay flat against tubes like March’s.

I emailed Athlon and asked for specific upgrades between I and II and they replied turrets but said that internals had not been changed. Would not give anything else up so if glass is better then maybe a different or additional coating?

Either they DID do something different with the glass, or my friends Gen 1 got some bad glass installed in it right from the get go out of the factory. Which isn`t entirely impossible. But i have to say, my Gen 2 is much cleaner and crisper than my friends Gen 1, by quite a bit. Not saying his is extremely bad, its just not as clean and crisp as mine. You could be very right about the lens coating. Coatings can make a difference.

Here again, the parallax is less sensitive on my Gen 2. I have no idea what they did, or how they make them less sensitive, but i sure like it better. I`m a bench rest shooter & reloader, not a scope engineer, lol, but i do like what they`ve done. The turrets, in my own opinion, were & are, a much nicer upgrade. And you can actually get a much better grip on them the way they machined them now.

Yassss yasssss yassssssss, i like those lens covers, lol.

I doubt Athlon will say the glass is any better, I am sure they don't want to kill the sales of the gen 1 that dealers may still have in stock.
Yeah i`m thinkin that, too. But for a few dollars more, i wouldn`t even bother with the Gen 1. Folks like us gun people though, when we see a new Gen, we`re on it like a rat on a cheeto` lol

As for my own opinion on the glass....let your own eyes be the judge. My eyes said "MUCH BETA GLAZZ" ;)

Been waffling about scopes the last couple of weeks about a higher magnification scope

Pulled the trigger today on an Athlon Gen3 4.5x27x50 ( a 50mm objective is as large as I could go and before the/any tariff's kick in).

Read many reviews and 99% of them said it was a very nice scope, so we will see.

Unfortunately, I will not be giving a report back in the next couple of weeks I imagine ......... had back surgery yesterday, so will be recovering for a bit.
