Asking for a friend, your opinions, insight

Also, in regard to shooting skill, we used 700 as the max distance shootable. His treehouse allows for a bench. However, I doubt he would take that shot. He has access to the farm year round, and can put steel anywhere. He won't take the shot lest he knows he can do it ethically.

You crack me up Josh....you and my buddy Brett would get along great! He actually prefaced his first question to me by saying he was considering building another rifle that he doesn't shoot!

Well..........which one do ya want?!!??
The history: I saw a post here last (edit! 2 summers ago! ) about a Tikka for sale. You know I’m a sucker for Tikkas. Well, the guy was selling for a deceased friends wife. He offered me deals I couldn’t refuse so I bought like a crazy man. When I was moving, I picked one to bring and one for home. I bought brass and dies before I left. I just haven’t had the time to shoot it. Too many other projects in the mix, so it sits. Reading your post, I thought about them.;)
The one in the Manners is a Howa action. The blue stock is a Remington.

Any love for the .280 Ackley?
I am usually even with or beyond publicized 280AI figures. Nothing wrong but also not neecssary. Went to the vbr range at Ridgeway and shot 10 1000 yd coyote out of ten. On the edge of energy in my opinion for deer at 1000 but I have sight settings to 1100. At 700 yds its so easy it should require time in the penelty box.

7 STW Old school no surprises, lots of good 7 mm bullets, plenty of load data. If he doesn't want to reload 7RUM.

I will assume this a serious question and the shooter is serious about attempting a shot at those distances at a deer.

I've seen those shots being made on the Outdoor or Sportsmen's Channel by long range specialists - can't remember the shows name. In fact they claim to sell a rifle / scope combo guaranteed to 1,000 yards and they offer a "Long Range Shooting School." If I was serious about this I'd consider contacting them for a recommendation. However this seems to me to be a very expensive way to harvest a deer.

I know nothing about shooting a game animal at those distance only that you need to be able to reliably place a shot in the vitals at whatever distance you intend to shoot and be able to do it under field conditions in variable weather.

There are many slightly differing opinions about caliber selection and powder capacity. Since the post is asking for opinions, I'll throw mine in. This isn't hunting it's deer sniping, it's trading marksmanship for hunting skill. There's no sport to it at 700+ yards. If you're punching paper, steel or an enemy combatant at that range it's all totally acceptable, for deer or any other game animal IMHO, not.

6.5x284 would be my suggestion too.. but unless your friend shoots thousands of rounds a year and knows how to read conditions and can make first round hits on little targets out to 700 yards i would ask him to be realistic about the distance he wants to shoot out to and keep it around 3 or 400 yards.. thats a pretty good shot to make with a hunting gun in a deer blind.. just my opinion..

Boys, lets not digress. Appreciate the comments on ethics. Ethics always important. No need to pee on one another here. Now, back to our topic at had...

Seeing a lot of 7mm fans. And 6.5 fans.

So lets hear more about your favorite bullet in each respective caliber, and why. We will look at the "container to launch them a little later...though 6.5-284 seems to be a favorite.

Picking a rifle for someone when you know nothing about his capability for shooting ?????????

I know his shooting. That's why I am asking about the tool, not the nut behind it.

All I am asking for is opinions on what works, for yinz (that is ya'll in Pittsburgh) if yinz have done it.

I may be able to help a little as I have a C-4,C-5 and C-6 fusion of the vertebra in my neck and lots of recoil doesn’t play a part in any type of shooting that I do. IMHO, a proven wind-bucking hunting bullet in a 6.5 Creedmoor or 6.5x284 cartridge (which some of the Savage rifles are chambered in) will be your best bet. (I like the 6.5 Creedmoor because you can usually find many brands of factory hunting ammo for it.)

If you go 7mm, you will need a higher BC bullet than a 140 or 150 grain to reach extended distances and the recoil of the 160s and up will not be pleasant on a person with serious neck issues. Nor will a 26, 27 or any Nosler rifle cartridge or Weatherby, or any big magnum type cartridge, from my experience. Without the “umph” to accurately propel a bullet out too 600 plus yards, your friend will need to set his sights a little lower. A 6.5mm hunting bullet with a high BC can successfully take deer at long distances (with the right conditions and lots of practice).

Well, I hope that this will help and I wish you both lots of success. Have a great day!

Scott

I used to watch that show all the time ( Long Range Pursuit ). Two brothers owned the company (gunwerks) and built some awesome equipment including special range finders that were programmed for the rifle they went with. Certainly not cheap, but certainly they know their business. They were mostly hunting in the Rockies where 600 and 700 yard shots were the only shots available on some of the game.

My first thought is get closer. Its not hunting if you dont get close. I personnally like 5 yards with a bow where its stealth and where you get a rush. Theres no adrenalin rush to not getting close. A bear at 5 yards, or a bear at 800 yards.. which makes you tingle more?

But straight 284 has my vote. Love the round for hunting. 162 berger vlds!

How about the 150 grain Nosler LR Accubond? Would it be a good option for him in 7mm?

Lots of opinions from folks with no long range shooting experience or knowledge. Typical of what has happened to this forum over the past several years. People read a lot, offer opinions, others read this then they offer opinions.........so sorta like generational welfare. You KNOW by doing, not by reading what others have done. Yes, you can acquire direction from reading but practical knowledge is where expertise comes from. Sorta like our largely failed higher education system. Colleges filled with professors with lots of degrees who have never worked in the public sector to generate products or profits teaching other. No wonder there are so many failed and dying businesses. Now it's crept into the shooting sports. It takes work and dedication to actually go experiment and try ideas to see what works. You want to know who wins matches on a consistant basis, who are always near the top of the list....it's the few who devote the time, energy, and yes, the money to cover all the bases. It takes effort to hunt and ethically shot beyond 3 or 4 hundred yards under hunting conditions. If you have not worked at this side of the sport maybe you should not be offering uneducated opinions.
