Are you ready for the dog towns??

So I’m out doggin with no range finder.
Ouch! I use Vortex Furys. The first year I used them, the button to activate the laser started acting up on my 3'rd day of the month long hunt. I called Vortex and they found me a new pair to exchange for mine nearby. Normally I would have sent them in for repair/replace and return. They really helped me out. I picked up a spare pair so I always have a backup with me now.

I never could get a range finder to work very well. Buddy had a Lecia that worked pretty good.
If you can get your phone to get an exact location, you should be able to get a land mark to determine a decent idea of distance.
As far as shooting the same towns and knowing distance, been shooting the same town myself since the plague left. It is by no means the same size or same distance today from a few short years ago. The original location looks like a nuclear bomb hit it, not a blade of grass, old mounds a d cactus with a few stragglers. This year the majority of them are a 1/2 mile west and spread out in tall grass the cattle didnt like.
Talk about mirage, no way to get to them and stay on the road. Rancher wants zero tire tracks off of the two track, so will have to deal with it.

This will be trip # 8 for me this year. We will have 4 guys total in my group. I'll be hitting the road Tuesday morning headed to South Central South Dakota on the Eastern edge of the Rosebud Reservation, but I'll be shooting on private ranches in the White River/Winner area. I plan on shooting Wednesday, Thursday and possibly Friday.

I'll be taking 6 rifles this year and just over 1800 rounds of ammo in total. These are the rifles and ammo for each I'll be taking this year:

20 Practical (375 rounds),
204 Ruger (290 rounds),
223 (480 rounds),
22-250 (320 rounds),
6.5 CM (80 rounds),
17 HMR (300 rounds).

My 20 and 22 cal rifles get the bulk of the shooting done for me and the 6.5 CM is going just to see if I can break the 1/2 mile mark on a dog this year. My previous record was 2 years ago with a custom 243 I had @ 795 yards using 105gr A-Max. I always start the day using the 17 HMR and when the dogs within 150 yards of me get too spooked I switch over to center fire. I use a Caldwell Stable Table to shoot off of. I wear long sleeved fishing shirts and a wide brimmed hat as my sun protection and a little sunscreen for my legs when I'm wearing shorts.

This is my typical set up when I'm shooting:

You guys are killing me. Had cataract surgery this year and then had a detached retina. All is healing well but no trip this year for me!

Leave some for me!

Lol good luck and good shooting

Leaving the 20th, because the ranch we shoot is going to poison in July. Between us and the poison, will have to shoot other property next few years. This happens when there has been extra precipitation, and they want hay or wheat.

Anyone know how the numbers in SE Colorado are? I used to go to Holly and in 12, 13, and 14 you could shoot as much as you wanted so long as you could find a ranch that didn't already have guys shooting on it that day. Went back in 18 and there weren't hardly any left, most had been wiped out by plague and the remaining cleaned up by poison. Ran into a member of my club who said he and some pals were going to Lamar where they had access to several good towns on some ranches. Just wondering how it is these days.

Reports I’ve got from family and friends in Lamar area…Holly Mcclave Wiley and south toward Springfield is they have a bunch of them! Have been getting good moisture through there and pups are out in full force. This was a couple weeks ago but I doubt it’s changed much.

It seems I was TOO ready for this year. I took over 1800 rounds of ammo just in case the shooting was really good and just in case I was able to shoot for 3 days. I only shot for 2 days and unfortunately we had to go on Rosebud tribal grounds since the private ranches we had been shooting at were unavailable due to road conditions and other circumstances.

Long story short, I only went through about 550 rounds in 2 days of shooting this year. I have so much ammo left I am planning on going out again the weekend just before the 4th of July and will only go if the good dog towns on deeded or private ranches are available. I will probably be staying in White River and I will be shooting in the White River/Mission/Winner area.

I'm going to try and find one person who wants to come along with me if I can. I'll be hitting the road Friday June 30th, shooting the 1st and 2nd of July, and returning on the 3rd. If anyone wants to go along, PM me for details. I'm from Eastern Iowa BTW.
