Are you ready for the dog towns??

Just finished loading the last of my ammo for our upcoming P dog trip to S Dakota. This will be our first trip and we are very much looking forward to it. So far a total of 1350 centerfire rounds and a 100+/- 22wmr rounds.
I’ve never loaded this much ammo before and have learned a ton. It’s been quite the undertaking in the 3 months since booking the trip. The 52gn 223 and 100gn 260 loads were the only ones that were already developed, the rest were worked up during the weekends and a few sick days from work. The Grendel load could use some more tweaking but ran out of time, a little over MOA but will have to do.
My buddy was pretty much in the same boat but not as experienced at developing a load( not that I’m all that great at it) but still managed to put together a 22-250 ai and hash out a respectable load. Anyway that’s our story, what have y’all been working on for the dog towns?? E

If you get into heavy shooting I suspect that your buddy will likely find that his 22/250 AI may need a new barrel when he gets back unless he controls himself and lets the rifle cool, which is hard to do when there are available targets.

Years ago I finally on the eary button - a couple of 223 Rem chambered rifles loaded with VV-133 and 40 gr Nosler or V-Max bullets at 3750 fps.
I am primarily a 100 to 300 yard shooter take only occassional longer shots just to challenge myself, the longest I have made was 500 yds and that combo worked just fine.

Good shooting -

You’ll learn a LOT on your first poodle shoot. I suspect you may be investigating different cartridges after this trip.

Also going in June this year. 17 more days! First time going early as we usually go in August/September. I’ve been going for almost 20 years. My buddy has been doing it for 30+ years. Will be hunting a few private lands from ranchers we have become friends with over the years.
I’m taking out an AR, a 22-250, and (2) 6br’s. One br is a 12 twist shooting 70’s and the other an 8 twist shooting 105’s.
My one buddy is taking a 223, a 22-250, a 6br, and a 25-06 sendero.
Each of us taking about 2500rounds each and I hope I shoot every last one….till it’s time to come back home and prep brass that is!

Good luck to everyone on y’alls trips. If you’re coming from the east and a white Denali passes you it’s just me.

We're heading out in about 3 weeks. Due to the plague, we haven't been in 3 years. Several years ago, I "cooked" the barrel on my 22-250, was never the same after that. One lesson I did learn, which applies to the 22-250 and others: they heat up fast, and cool down slow.
I've moved to a 204, 20 VT, and 17 HMR. Hope I come home with empty brass and no loaded rounds.
Good luck to everyone on your trips!

Work close to far, small to larger caliber. Have fun, protect your skin/eyes/ears. Drink water, water, water. Put the wind/sun at your 6 whenever you can. Wet wraps/fans for barrels. Cold fried chicken is a great lunch. Rangefinder, wind meter or at least a flag. DON'T SHOOT ANY LIVESTOCK.

Leaving 6/2 on our 10th year. Out of time, not finished loading=late nights ahead. I usually take about 2500 rounds but bring back loaded ammo. We travel about 1k to Montana and have a blast. Shooting off a ladder rack but last year we used tripods on the ground too.

The 220 Swift stays home these days and using small stuff with no regrets. 17H, 17FB, 22H and 222. They are cheap to load, no recoil and they work very well. Keep your ammo in the shade. Sunscreen on all exposed skin, and a big hat. A beach umbrella to eat lunch under. Spare tire with air in it, a real jack, a small compressor, chains, a come-a-long. Be prepared for anything and pray you need none of it.

Be safe and have a great time!! And don't pet the snakes just because they have a baby rattle.

Man I wish I lived closer to some of these states with abundance of p dogs
How far do most of you travel for your trip?
I'm making a trip later this morning. It's a grueling drive. I'll stop at the gas station and get a soda and by the time I finish it I'll be there. Day before yesterday, I went the other direction to a friends ranch to shoot gophers (Beldings ground squirrels). It's a bit further, about 45 minutes. Southwest Montana is a good place.

I have loaded about 450 rounds for my 6BR and 550 rounds for my 22-250, leaving in 2 weeks. I have been doing this pretty regularly for 60 years.

I started with a Sako varmint in 243 , shooting prairie dogs in Wyoming while waiting for my antelope to be butchered and frozen in the 1960's. I realized the prairie dog shooting was more fun that hunting antelope, so gave up on the antelope. Bought a tuned Rem 700 varmint in 223, then tried a super heavy barreled AR15 in 223, magazine was always in the way and it was still a 223, so I converted another Rem 700 to 22-250 so it could reach out farther than the 223, McMillan stock, Krieger barrel, Jewell trigger, Then I got a 6BR for the longer shots, full custom rifle, built to order, Stiller RBLP, Krieger, McMillan, Jewell, Nightforce NXS, 88 gr Berger varmint bullets. Since then I have replaced the 6BR and 22-250 barrels several times.

Moved from a lyman front rest to a SEB Mini with BlakeBarrels upper, added the post and a Kestrel Elite in a wind vane running Applied Ballistics, and showing on my iphone. I got a set of Lieca rangefinding binoculars. After too many years of using lousy rotating tables, I designed and built my own rotating table that would rotate smoothly and not wobble.
I have a good setup, and have moved from quantity to quality. I let the other guys shoot the close ones, and I work on the distant ones. I range them, then input that into my iphone, and the Kestrel gives me the windage and elevation. I enjoy it when I get a distant 1 shot hit. I stop frequently to relax in my folding chair and have a beverage, and spot for a newbie we occasionally bring along.

The original poster asked " Are you ready for the dog towns?". Well like John Wick says ..,.... "YEAH, I'm ready".
