Are there any decent low cost rear bags (benchrest)?

I just bought a Bald Eagle Big 50 Windage front rest and a 3" front bag.

It's will be used on a rifle that I am installing a 3" bag rider forearm on. I am also thinking about making an adjustable rear bag rider that will run parallel to the bore, no angle, probably polished aluminum.

I have not found any low cost rear bags that look good and I don't want to spend $100+ on a rear bag with the wrong options.

Also, I'm not sure on the fill type.

The main rifle this is for will be under 20lbs probably. I might build a heavier 338 caliber rifle fairly soon and I may occasionally use the front rest with a Serbu .50 which seems to weigh a lot.

What is the best budget option and how should I shape the bag rider to work with it, or a generic shape that will work with many rear bags?

I spent around $200 on a complete front rest. It seems silly to spend more than half of that on just a bag.

I have, but which one?

I have found very little info about why you would pick one ear type over another.

Also the price is quite high compared to my complete front rest (with bag).

Hell, at $100+, I would try making my own if the materials were less than $25 or so.

Call protektor and have them make you a cordura or silver slick bunny ear rear bag with hard bottom. Mine was like $58 and it rocks. I even went with the heavy fill.

Regarding which ear type for your request of (benchrest);
I cannot speak for Protektor but with Edgewood, They make their rear bags with different stitch widths to accommodate different buttstock toe widths. (The spread between the ears at the base). This allows a buttstock to seat low into the wedge between the ears for greater linear tracking of the buttstock. Tall ears aid in supporting the linear tracking as well. Edgewoods are rather expensive bags though. Perhaps Protektor could offer the same service? give 'em a call.

I’ve got to second a call to Tom at Protektor. Let him know what your trying to achieve and he can hook you up. Even make a custom bag that you’ll have forever. That’s what I did and couldn’t be happier.

Pardon me wondering why you would shoot a 338 and a 50 but want to go cheap on a rear bag?
Spent all the money on bullets be my guess.
I have a nephew that couldn't find the funds to buy .264 bullets, but found the coin to buy a .338 LM.
Puzzling to say the least.
To the OP, I use Protector that I got off classifieds.

As for cost, I am not a benchrest shooter for the most part.

I'm going to try it for the ELR shooting I will do once in a blue moon.

I don't need something that will let me shoot 5 shots before the wind changes.

This is a rich man's sport and I'm already over budget...

Don't judge me.

@Dud you might find a Caldwell will fill the bill, I’ve seen them at Sportsman Wharehouse regularly.

The taller rabbit ears can disturb a stock with a low monte-Carlo type cheek piece. Rear bags with shorter bunny ears avoid this problem.

I know. I really don't care that I spend too much on rifles I shoot too infrequently and then try to save money on bullets, powder and accessories with my choice of caliber and bargain hunting.

Is it the best way to go? Maybe not, but it's the way I like to do it.
