Having ordered a few CMP 40X's in the last year or so I tried to do some butt pad swapping among them. I found there was enough stock variation that a butt pad from one never fit another one properly. Plugging and re drilling holes might have helped but as is they never lined up.
I ended up buying a Pachmayr RP 200 in black/whiteline and using that. I had to grind it to fit a little bit. Not an expert at that kind of thing but did a good enough job that it looked much better than the original pad that had rotted off.
