Are custom-made reamers expensive?

I'd like to get a custom reamer for 6.5/284 with a fairly short throat, both to shoot 100gr HPs and 107 gr SMKs and have them seated to engage the rifling, as well as to have more meat in the throat to have something to chase as it erodes.

The throat in my Savage barrel is too long, and I can't seat 100 gr Sierra HPs or (barely) 107 gr SMKs to engage the rifling.

I see Grizzly sells two different PT&G reamers for 6.5/284 ... one with the long throat for the 140 gr bullets and a small diameter neck...and another with a shorter freebore but a larger diameter neck.

I'd like one with a specific diameter neck and a short throat, for when I rebarrel next time.

If I were to send a drawing of the chamber I wanted the reamer to create to someone like PT&G, would it be much more expensive to get a custom reamer, than to buy one off the shelf?

Thanks for any clues. This is all new to me (don't even have lathe yet, but thinking ahead).

No difference in price. It's just a matter of punching a few changes in the grinding program. You just have to wait about a month to get it.

Last year PTG was quoting wait times on custom reamers in the 6 months or more. Is turnaround improving?

Are they going to want ± tolerances for various dimensions on my drawing? (Neck dia., freebore length?)

I'm curious how good a drawing and spec they'll want (and that I should expect on reamer dims) ... anyone know where to find a typical drawing for this that I could mimic?

Thanks again.

FWIW, PTG is still "making" my 6.5 x 55 Swede reamer; 4 flute, carbide, live pilot, which i understand is a "custom."

Ordered early February, not here yet. Have heard it was "in the bottom of the work tray."

So, not really more expensive, just slow (to be expected in current situation).

If you need the reamer in a hurry you could always pay a little more for them to rush it.

PTG is pretty busy with new product lines coming out all the time.

Best thing to do for a custom reamer is call and ask to speak with Dave Kiff. He is always more than happy to go over your design with you and suggest modifications or specs used for certain bullet weights and types. If it is completely custom, you may want to order a sizing die reamer as well.

Cost is no different than a standard reamer in stock and 6 weeks isn't that long.

Sometimes if Dave gets really excited about your design he will put a rush order on it. He's funny like that. Lol :D

I asked Dave to make a special stepped jig bore reamer for me and told him I needed it fast. It was $50 more, but I got it in about 10 days.

About 3 weeks ago, I ordered a 6br reamer for blue box lapua brass and 0 freebore. They had long throated reamers on the shelf and reground the throat to 0 FB.
They said about 2 weeks and it was at the post office this Monday.
Maybe they can do the same for the 6.5/284 reamer

Same price....$138

I called my order in January...simple 6mm BR reamer. Was told 8 weeks. Called today and was told shipping Friday, Monday at the latest. No big deal since I no longer need the reamer. Will throw it up for sale once I get it. I have a clymer go gauge to go with it...

Newbies to custom rifle building will soon learn to start builds in the late summer or fall if they need 'em by spring so there's no rush if plans get behind schedule... ;)

I've ordered a few from Kiff. If you speak to him directly he'll tell you how long it'll take. Most I've paid was $138.

There's gotta be 1000's of finish reamer laying around especially guys on this site.

PTG has been delivering my reamers (no wildcats) in about 6 weeks. Normally $138 + shipping, but a new 308 reamer was $117 + shipping. A .339" chamber neck with .100" freebore. All with the floating pilots.

Thanks, guys.

I guess I should decide what exactly I want and then ask here on the classifieds if someone has one they want to part with.

Boy, if I would have known the "rush" option was a option, I would have been all over it. I have been waiting for my Dasher reamer since January.
