AR 15 trigger and stock

Looking at getting my first AR 15 build shortly. I have an Aero Precision lower minus the trigger and stock, and will be getting a 20" Krieger heavy barrel 7.7" twist upper. Don't really know much of anything about ARs, but figured I'd use the lower that's been sitting on my shelf for about 8 years or so...More of a bolt action guy, but if I can get a good shooting AR out to 600-800 yards I think it'd be a fun range toy, and also a great truck/calling rifle for dogs also. Plan is to handload the 73g ELDMs around 2800-2850fps. I just picked up a nice little Burris Fullfield E1 4-14x42mm with Long Range MOA reticle and will be going with some Warne Maxima horizontal medium rings to keep it simple. Hopefully the rings will work and be tall enough, or should I go with the highs?

My 2 main questions here are regarding what trigger and stock to go with. I'm use to 1-1.5# triggers in my bolt rifles, but not looking to spend $300 on a trigger for an AR. I was looking at the RRA 2 stage varmint at 3.5# for around $90. Is that a decent trigger? Also, as far as stocks go I want something with an adj cheekpiece as I'm not a huge fan of the basic stocks that have your head and cheek so low. Makes for awkward cheek/eye alignment if that makes sense. So in that regard I was looking at the Luth-AR MBA-1 kit.

Any opinions, recommendations, or criticism welcome!

Here is the upper I should be getting

The luth is a good choice with the adjustable comb, I have one.
I would look at the larue trigger at under 100.00 excellent trigger.
Or a JARD trigger which I have a couple and like the adjustability but they’re a little more expensive.
With AR parts you can try them and if you don’t like them or it doesn’t work for you you can usually sell them and not lose money.

Sounds good, thank you. I'll check out the LaRue trigger.

My plan is to try and get all this right the first go round. I don't want the hassle of sending stuff back or trying to sell it.

I have the RRA NM triggers on some of my AR’s and really like them. You can get I believe its KAW Valley Arms springs and make it lighter which is really nice. These triggers made a big difference in the shooting and feel of the AR’s. If I shot comps I would look at a Geissele trigger, very nice but pricey. The Luth stock is a good one. I would look at Burris P.E.P.R. Mounts for my scope as it will give you proper eye position.

Sounds good, thank you for that information. Looks like it's between the RRA and LaRue for a trigger. The Luth stock seems to be a decent one for my needs/wants also. Got those 2 pretty much narrowed down.

So I do have a question regarding that Burris style scope mount. I see a lot of ARs and guys that have them, and I see others with just a set of rings, but are they really necessary over just a set of rings? With a flat top receiver wouldn't you be able to just use a set of rings and position the scope where it needs to go, or is that just really not the case? Not quite sure I really see or understand the difference between the two. Seem like they both do the same job, no?

Second on the LaRue trigger, the Rock River has been known to fail the 4.5# requirement for CMP & NRA competition. Not dangerous, but an aggravation when you're set for the match. Fortunately, I had a backup lower with me.

I've shot MANY of the more expensive triggers out there, and for the money, the CMC 3.5# trigger is probably my favorite (I've actually never had one actually measure over #3, though, which is great). I've outfitted multiple ARs with that trigger. PSA usually has them on sale for $89-99 (a few times a month).

As far as the stock goes, I often suggest Vltor, but for your application, what you linked looks great. I'm actually considering one of these for myself.

The two stage Schmid Inside trigger can be made to break @ about 2 lbs just by replacing the disconnector spring with a standard mil spec spring.
Midway has them, look for the little "S".

RRA Varmint trigger is a good choice for your build. As Walt mentions eye relief is more of a problem than height but you will want the scope plenty high enough. 1/2 extended riser with the medium rings should do the trick. You don’t need 20 moa on the rail but 10 moa is nice to have to keep the reticle in the middle of the travel of the scope. I also like the Burris Signature AR QD mount as a way to get the scope forward and up and add some elevation in one piece mount.

Edit to add … watch out for the comb cheek piece getting in the way of the charging handle. Not familiar with the Luth AR stock but it does happen. I use side charger bolts with AR that has a cheek riser usually.

The cantilever mount allows for proper eye relief while keeping the glass on the receiver. Take a look at my 5.56 upper…..if I was using regular rings the front ring would be acting as a “bridge” between the receiver and the hand-guard…..which is not really a good thing if there’s any “slop” between the two.

Like has been mentioned I prefer a cantilever mount to position the scope distance and height wise where it needs to be. Warne makes an excellent USA made one. Ive used several of these in the 30mm version and they are great.

As far as triggers, the Larue is a great choice for the money. Ive had Elftmann drop in triggers, colt national match triggers, rock rivers, etc. The ones Ive kept are the colts and the Larue triggers.

The Larue MBT triggers are perfect. Personally I like the A2 buttock and a rail mounted to the flatop with rings to move the scope forward ( necessary when prone). White Oak armament has a faq sheet with ring height w/ rail for proper cheek weld.

A couple suggestions.
Get a cantilever scope mount, you can chase your tail trying to get the correct height and you will not be able to get proper eye relief with those rings.

Second just be aware that the upper appears to not have a free float handguard so resting on it will put pressure on the barrel. Not the best setup for accuracy but maybe it won't have too much effect on the heavy barrel.

Have fun with your new project!

Holy cow, so much information and choices with this AR stuff. A bit overwhelming at times.

Think I'm gonna just go with the LaRue trigger for the money. Seen a 100s of positive reviews to 1 negative on them. I'm not looking to spend $300 on a trigger. More like $100. So this should work nicely.

I think I see and get the difference of just rings and the cantilever scope mount now. I will probably end up just getting the Burris PEPR mount for around $85 on ebay.

As fast as the stock goes, still liking the Luth-AR MBA-1 with their buffer/spring kit. However a guy mentioned about commercial and milspec components and matching up the lower/stock/buffer? I have an Aero Precision lower. Is that going to work for the Luth-AR MBA-1 stock and buffer?

Thanks for all the help guys. If I was doing this without you, I would've already messed up on the trigger and optic mounting system haha.

My only comment on the Larue is the fattness of the blade. RRA feels better to me. but I use Geissele HSNM triggers in most of my lowers so I am a bit spoiled.
