AR-10 in 308 sacrilege?

rap36case

Working up loads for new Shilen 308win
I've been talking to my local gun shop about an AR-10 in 308. I am curious if the Springfield Armory Saint Victor is an accurate rifle at 1000yards? They have others being shipped at a higher prices.

Never really cared about AR's until all the politics. I don't want a junk gun. I want to use an Omeg 300 can with a variable gas block. If I cant shoot at 1000yards like my bolt rifles, I may not bother.

What do you see as accurate at 1000y? An FTR rifle in 308 would be shooting 185+ and typically a 28" barrel. Exterior ballistics that will be very hard to match in an AR, especially an off the rack AR.

If barrel length and bullet weights are restricted to AR feeding dimensions, I'd argue that an AR will still be accurate enough to challenge the shooter, but since your a bolt rifle shooter, the AR will most likely be more sensitive to all the variations in the shooter system (ammo included).

I'm my experience, and AR will be sub- 2 MOA with good ammo, but sub 1-MOA is a rarity off the rack without careful tuning.

Depends on your budget
KAC SR25
GAP -10 .
LMT MWS
LaRue OBR 7.62

Have owned a KAC SR25 ER IN 308 that shot 1/2 -3/4 moa easily with handloads if i did my part.
Also had an LMT mws with a custom bartlein 6.5 cm barrel that shot very well .

in a word no and certainly not that brand
i own an armalite ar-10(t)
that is their target version 24" bbl
but the throat/chamber is actually 7.62 mil spec i think
single fed berger 175's did 1/2 moa at 100/200. did ok at 600 but i knew little about shooting at distance at the time.
again single fed, 2.96 oal
i am doing a 24" krieger set up for 175 tmk...at 2.8" we will se what it does.

i believe the mil spec for 308/7.62 sniper ammo, the current 175 smk, is 1.1 moa tested at either 300 or 600 yards...think 300, with a listed range of 800 yards. stretching to 1000 in a gas gun with a short bbl is gonna be tuff

how does a 0.116" 100 yard group from an ar10 sound...bib bullets.
ya need to clarify your statement
bib bullets.. 1/15 twist target ar10
i agree in most guns at most distances

what bullet weight.
600 on a 2 moa target aint hard in the accuracy world
600 yd br group bolt gun was under 1/2" for years
too slow and too light for 1k
i like ar's but they have limits..unless ya tweek'um

IMO : As I've got a few , AR-10's require a Quality Barrel carefully mated to the receiver ( squared up ) with a GOOD Quality Bolt will hold their own against Bolt Rifles . Now I'm NOT talking unlimited class BR lead sled stuff , just Good quality Bolt Rifles . Exception to the rule out of the box , PSA 20" with match ammo or handloads is Sub MOA . Have an 18" on a GOOD day 1.75 " + but consistent .

I just built one using premium parts from Reputable manufactures along W/ a Lija Barrel ,currently with careful handloads ,I'm seeing .625" #5 shot groups @ 100 yd. 168's Hornady . I've NOT tested all My known loads but am getting real good accuracy with IMR 4064 and trying to dial in 4895 as well . Velocity is running 2580-2620 with no outward signs of pressure issues but suspect it's on the cusp of safe velocity .

I generally DON'T buy premium bullets ,not competing so why flush the coin .

I built a fun lr-308 and decided that instead of compete with bolts and all that, embrace the magazine. The old M852 match chamber is perfect for 155-175 and does great with anything lighter too.

Heavier that 175, well; even a bolt fun would seat them further that 2.820" so there goes the mag. 175 does ok at 1k, but within 800y it's a lot of fun!

I would buy an aero lower and have compass lake build you a matching upper with a nice barrel.

Frank did a rock creek in 6.5 creed for me and it shoots really, really well.

As a guy who has shot M110s and a Seekins SP10M.

1000% recommend the Seekons SP10 of you can fond the M series go for it. BUT Glen Seekins make one of the beat AR10 platform. I also recommend take a professionally instructed course for semi-autos. It requires more skill than a bolt gun to drive properly.

BUT for easy button and cheaper I recommend a MK12 SPR they are awesome and they flatout run well.

One of my biggest seller remorse guns was an RRA LAR-8 Predator HP with its cryogenic treated 20" barrel. It shot groups using 168gr Amax's over 41.7gr AR-Comp @ 2.80 COL, like this primer test at 100 yds. Absolutely loved CCI 200's

The worst part is I still keep in touch with the former co-worker who I sold it to and keep trying to get him to sell it back. He said that it just sits in his safe, unfired since he bought it from me back in 2008. He said that if he dies before me (unlikely), that I get first rights of refusal from his estate. Haunts me... :(

I only had my RRA LAR-8 for a short period, Half MOA groups
with Israeli IMI M-118. Mine was the Varmint with 26" Wilson
full bull. Racing ATV's was more of a priority, and cashed it out.

RAP,

I bought a Davidson Defense 20" upper, inexpensive bolt, and a PSA lower for less than $800, but that was two years ago. Shoots Hornady 178 ELDs to sub MOA at 100, haven't been able to take it out further. Velocity indicates it should reach 1k at over SS speeds.

I've heard good things about the RR LAR-8 series, just be aware the lower won't fit Aero style uppers should you decide to try a different caliber upper. Wilson makes and sells barrels for the AR-10 should you decide to just change barrels.

Don't know anything about the brand you list. Neither cheap or expensive will guarantee a quality level.
