Thats true when I make my own stocks, but when i'm asked to do a Richards Micro-fit for example, it's nice to be able to use the colors to match the gaps !!!!!!

I've used both Devcon and Acraglass gel and quite frankly prefer the Acraglass. You need to add either powdered steel or aluminum to the Acraglass gel for the best results. I use Pledge and then Johnson's Paste wax for a release agent. Interestingly Devcon offers Plastic Stainless Steel, Bronze as well as steel and aluminum epoxy kits. The very best bedding compound was sold by H&S Precision while they were still in Arizona. Absolutely Zero shrinkage but had to be measured by weight.

Yep, If Devcon has a down side its the odd mix ratio. 9:1 by weight, 2.5:1 by volume. I go by weight & tare a small container & weigh on powder scale to get ratio exact...... Polish the Kiwi on action to get tightest fit.

Devcon has been on all my Hart smithed guns, on the one's i have done myself i have to confess
MicroBed, no longer available, but i fortuntely sill have some, has been absolutely supurb.

I've only bed a few rifles. Last 3 were with Devcon 10110. Great consistency and easy to work with. I will continue to use it.

I see, that makes sense. I have a richard's microfit on my 20 vartarg, so I know exactly what you are talking about when you say "gaps"

The richard's stocks turn out nice, but there's a lot of work that needs to be done to get them there. definitely not "drop-in" stocks.

The bedding compound from Score High in Arizona works well if you need color. I actually like the accraglass for repairs, but not for bedding.

have never used Acraglass but I have used Bedrock (miles Gilbert) and Like it... Devcon is good also..lt depends what you want for thicness...

This is spot on! Weighing on a scale is the only way to go. When adding the hardener do not go with the assumption if a little is good, more should be better. The mixture will not harden properly. Don't ask me how I know! Luckily, I did not pull that boo-boo on a bedding job. Weigh it and you will love it for bedding jobs.

I tried JB weld the first timeI did one. There were a lot of voids in the bedding surface, and it ran a LOT. I spent a lot of time with a dremel cleaning it out of places I didnt want it. (The voids may have been my fault.) The JB weld has held up fairly well and the rifle shoots ok.

I would use JB weld if I couldnt find anything else, but you can find other stuff through the mail.

The second time, I used the devcon and I couldnt be happier. Much easier to use and I didnt get the run or voids.

Devcon is by fare the easiest and strongest to use ( I can't say for marine tex as I have not used it).
Accraglass is good when you want to match the color of the stock of a "classic"rifle, but I tend to do the bedding in two steps to avoid any bubble : a general bedding first to fill most gaps and a second bedding to get the action really tight and finish the bedding.
Accragel is definitely not strong enough and has a kind of "nylon" squeezy texture once dry.
JB weld works well but you have to wait 10 to 15 min after mixing depending on temperature before starting to apply the bedding into your stock, and then it will have the right texture and produce a bubble free bedding.
Using modelling plasticine of good quality to plugs all the holes In action and stock definitely help and yes you can't beat our Kiwi shoe polish ;-)

DON'T use JB weld it expands when hardening. I used it on a 96 mauser and had to scrape the inleting to get the required fit. I use devcon steel putty or alum. putty. the alum. putty is a light grey color so if any is going to show use steel which is almost black. I have heard good comments on marine-tex so I may try it on my next bedding job. acra-glass gel also works good if you mix thoroughly and add dye and 20% powdered glass
