Anyone running a 17 hornet?

Thinking about getting a CZ 527 IN 17 hornet. Is anyone messing around with one of these and how do you find the accuracy?

I've got a 527 in 222 and it's a nice gun but I wonder how they go in the 17 vermin models.

Might want to consider .17 Fireball. .22 (.17) Hornet brass is hard to come by right now. .17 Fireball + 20g V-Max =3800fps. Fast, flat and hits like the hammer of Thor. Hell on Rockchucks, Ground Squirrels, Coyotes and other such vermin. H322 is easy on your brass and very, very accurate. .17 Hornet has been around for over a year and components are still hard to come by. YMMV dedogs

I had a 17 Furball, and was very disappointed - I don't have one anymore.

I would get a 17 Hornet over the 17 Furball - sometimes you don't need the hammers of Thor.

Cat, What rifle, and what were you dissapointed with. Granted you don't always need a hammer just wondering what you didn't like. dedogs

+1 on the hornet over the Fireball. Had both, but only have the CZ 527 .17 hornet now. Ammo and brass were very difficult to find for the FB. The CZ is very accurate even with factory ammo, better than the FB with match quality reloads, and the set trigger is a plus. One of my favorite purchases in the last year or two.

dedogs... I bought Remington's brand new stainless deluxe presentation goodie... a CDL Commemorative with a heavy, fluted barrel.

Really nice, but shot for skat.

I think the 17 Furbal has prettty much been a commercial folp, as few guns are chambered in it now.

I would truely loooove to have a Browning 1895 Low-Wall in 17 Hornet... but I can't afford one right now.

As would I. I would do that in a New York minute. New Remi's seem to be mostly junk (IMO). The Cz's I have seen have been beautiful rifles. Waiting on one in .20 VarTarg to arrive. My .17 FireBall is built on an old 700 that's been tricked and will consistently group in the teens at 100yds. Doesn't copper foul with judicious use of Jb paste AND Jb Boreshine. I have yet to try Lapua brass but I will soon as I can get my hands on some.

The rifle itself, was yummy... smooth and everything was fitted very well... it was the insides of the barrel that killed it for me - the gun shot ~0.7" to 0.8" on average, and I guess that is good enuff for the critters it was entended for, but I didn't think it was good enufff for a ~~$1,000 rifle.

And since I have a Rem 700 Classic in 221 Furball with a heavy-ish DAG barrel that shoots ~1/2" (all day long when I do my part ;) ;) ;) )... well, it had to go.

The guy who bought it, loves it - so it is probably me ;)

I agree, I would expect better accuracy out of a 1000.00 rifle also. I also have a .221 "FurBall" that is my go to coyote rifle. 40g V-Max anchors them right there when I do my part. Built on an old Sako action. Top 5 favorite of all the long guns I own. Have you seen many 1885 Browning's for in small calibers and if so, what was the price range? dedogs Sorry, I know this is off topic :-[ :-[ :-[

The Brownings are ~$1,500 I don't know if there are a lot of them around - I don't look for theme cuz it is painful ;)

I have a CZ 527 in 17 hornet. I bought it because I love my HMR so much, and the hornet is just as cheap to shoot (plus a little work in reloading) but gives you more power, while still being quiet enough to take a shot if need be without muffs.
Mine shoots 3/4" with a max load of AA2200 and 25 V-Max. I've only put maybe 50 rounds through it as I've been distracted with other guns, but I enjoy it and bet you will as well. I think it a fine cartridge for groundhogs and the like.
Don't worry about what was said regarding brass availability- I've been tracking it and seems Hornady has been sending out batches every two months. I've got a lifetime supply that I bought on three separate occasions. Just set an auto email reminder at midway, Graf's, midsouth, etc.

I have a .17 Hornet in the CZ 527 Varmit model. I'm really enjoying it. I shoot 20 gr V-Max's with Win 296 and am achieving 1/2" groups. I've had no trouble finding Hornady brass. It's not always in stock, but does become available fairly regularly. I also shoot a CZ 527 in .221 Fireball. The Fireball definitely hits prairie dogs a lot harder.

I'm having a Savage action worked on and was considering building a 17-223 but I've also looked real hard at the CZ in 17 Hornet. I just wish Savage made a full sized action for the 17 Hornet because I just don't care for their model 25 action at all.

I am curious to know what the twist rate is in the Cz 527 in .17 Hornet vs. the twist rate of the .17 Fireball. Anyone know if they are the same? Also not sure if you folks noticed but this fellow is in Australia and components available readily here may not be there. + he already has a 527 in .223 and he could make a switch barrel out of it and run the same bolt. These were my reasons for suggesting a .17 FireBall. And I'd be suprised if a .17 Hornet was more accurate than a properly tuned .17 FireBall. Just sayin' dedogs

I've got a CZ 527 in 17 hornet. So far I like it but don't have a load completely worked up for it yet. Looks like it will shoot around 1/2" five shoot groups once all is said and done. Brass and ammo is starting to come available. Midway, and others, have had both recently.

I think I'm really going to like it but I'm thinking of it as a center fire 17 WSM. It only uses 11.0 - 12.0 grains for AA1680 and 20 gr Nosler varmagedon's which are fairly cheap. I didn't consider a fireball as I already have a 17 Rem. My 17s are a 17 HMR, 17 HH, and 17 Remington. For me, that made a nice spacing. If you are only going to have one 17 and are not trying load cheap, then the Fireball or Mach IV might be a good all around caliber.

BTW, the machining on my CZ is excellent for a factory rifle and would give them a definite thumbs up over the savage or ruger.

I had one of each, Model 7, CDL with the HB and the triangle barrel model. The first two were junk, like yours, didn't shoot worth a damn. Didn't even attempt to work up a load on the latter. Sold it NIB. Freebore was so long, a 25 gr reload couldn't reach the lands and forget about shooting 20s. New Lilja on the CDL and new Shilen featherweight on the Model 7 and they both shoot 1/2 or less with Kindlers around 38-3900. Whatever reamer Remington was using wasn't conducive to accuracy.

I can touch the lands with 20 gr bergers, v-max and noslers in my CZ so not too much through. Also, the camber is centered to the bore. Fired cases on the neck have less than 1,000 run-out. If you are looking for a CZ 527 in 17 Hornet, a local gun store here in Jackson, MS has one. No one knows what to do with varmint rounds in MS so its just sitting there while people out west are tripping over themselves to get a CZ in a hornet.

Accuracy in my Savage Model 25 is dreadful.

A good little round and just right out to about 220 yards.
