Anyone like racing?

Let's not forget Miss Hurst Golden Shifter
Two of my fondest memories from drag racing.
Good old Linda. Boy the last time I saw her was at Garlit's International Drag racing Hall of Fame Banquet in 93. I was a sponsor for Don's Banquet for about 3 years because I know his youngest Daughter Donna and his son in Law Greg Capitano who is married to Don's oldest daughter. I had a table reserved for me and 4 other couples. Well I was going out with this girl from Liverpool, NY that was a knockout and when she walked into that banquet room Linda was talking to a bunch of guy's and everyone just turned around and looked at Lisa and boy did that piss Linda off because now she wasn't the center of attention. She gave my ex a look that I will never forget. If looks could kill Lisa would of been dead right on the spot. Roland Leong, (Of Hawaiian Fame) and his GF Suzie was sitting with me because he didn't have a table so I told him to sit down and he said to me and Lisa a little later on, did you see the expression on Linda's face when you walked in to the room? We all thought it was funny. Women!

Dirt bikes, street and strip, then dirt circle track. I thought I missed it, then got back into it for a year or two. Turn key and go competitive modified is just stupid money today. Lol, it has changed little, the drama and spending a few thousand to make a few hundred.
I do miss a good sprint car race though.

I will just stick with guns. Even with what I spend I seem to have a bit left.

In 2003 I moved up to south central PA near York from the People's Republic of Maryland to end my weekly commute up here for the dirt oval sprint car races, which became my favorite in the mid 80's. Nothing like watching the driver you crew for push a 410 sprint to the limits on dirt. 900+ hp in a 1275-1300 pound car does make some exciting racing.

From time to time I'll take my '84 Rx-7 to an autocross. I'm not much good at it and my car ain't that fast, but it's a whole lot of fun and it'll shoot a fireball from time to time so there ain't much to complain about.

As a wise may once said, any car that shoots fire is a good car.

Is that a Berkley?
I wondered what it was too, and after chardog's post above, I understand why I didn't recognize it, but I knew it wasn't a Berkeley, lol - my first car was one of those. Unfortunately, it wasn't one of the "big block" ones with the Royal Enfield motorcycle engine....

Powderbrake, that looks just like mine, except in addition to removing the hubcaps like you did, I painted the wheels silver with aluminum paint to match the brake drums. It was fun to drive in autocross events, where the front wheel drive and very short straights somewhat offset the low power - that and the fact that the curb weight was on the order of 800 pounds.

Drag strip, cars, then bikes.
I came home August of '70 from a year in RVN. Home 30 days on leave, then back for a second tour. My Father and I went car shopping. He was a Ford guy from Day One. None of the Ford dealerships had any big blocks, Mustang or Torino for sale by then, new 1971's were about six weeks out. We drive by the Plymouth dealers on the way back home, and Woo-Hoo!!!. In the front row on the used car lot was a Blood Red 1968 Road Runner coupe. We stop, and the salesman comes out. I am still in uniform. He tells my Father that I probably do not want that car, it has a huge motor, and the gas mileage is terrible. He tells us it has been sitting there for two months, no takers. We do take it for a test drive. Jump to the Interstate, and in about 30 seconds (seemed like) I got the speedometer pegged. Woo-Hoo! Part II. We get back alive, and I pop the hood. My Oh My, there's a 426 Hemi under the hood. $1650 plus tax, and I am on the road.

I think I got nine speeding, burnouts from a stop light/sign citations in that thirty days. About six weeks after I get back to Chu Lai, I get a letter from the Illinois DMV forwarded from my Father. My Drivers License is suspended. I have 72 hours to turn it in to the DMV in town or they will issue a warrant for my arrest. Ha! I send the nice man a letter letting him know I am in Chu Lai, along with detailed instructions on how to get to our AO next to the Rappelling Tower on the beach once you turn off Hwy 1.
See you all in four months, if I make it back.

The guy did have a sense of humor, two or three weeks later I get another letter. Comes to the Ranger Company. He just tells he to come to the DMV if I make it back, DO NOT DRIVE; and reapply for a license. Got back, got my license back, and thirty days later, went back for my third and final tour. I behaved, just got one ticket.

Were the early 1970's as crazy for any of the rest of you?
Owned a 71 Hemi Challenger. 3677.00 OTD. Purchased it from my uncle in 79. Had it thru 1996. Sold it and wish I didn't. All original. Made about 30K selling it but today I could have made 300 sounds like. All original even redline tires. Stored heated in winter, conditioned air in heat of summer. Plum crazy color. Loved that car. Just can't compare it to todays Hemi Challengers other than the old carburated Hemi muscle.

Don't watch Mecum or BJ selling stuff like you used to have or you'll regret it Ow. :(

Back in early 1968 I had chance to buy a slightly used, well maintained full boogy 427/435 1967 Corvette convertible in excellent condition for $3400 (owner wanted money quick for some aspect of his drag racing effort) and my wife of a few months said no, even though I had the cash. Fast forward about 20-22 years and for some reason my wife is watching a Mecom auction on cable and an essentially identical Corvette (even same color) came up on the auction block. Went for $65,000, she was shocked, remarked that she should have let me buy the 'Vette. Well, I never did get my Corvette, but at least that auction on TV gave me a small measure of revenge. :)

The muscle car stuff hurts, the worst however is my ex sold my 1967 21 window VW Deluxe bus for $500 before I could retrieve it.

Used to drag race bikes, in a former life (late 80's through 2001). Wouldn't trade the experience for anything. My last bike was the 1400cc turbo Kaw KZ shown in the pic. It would run high 7's @ 167 -170 mph.....all day long.....if I did my part :p

Cool cars, cool stories. Back in the day I had a 66GTO and then a 68SS396. Didn't race myself but as a southern redneck we loved watching. Back then it was individual owners doing the work themselves, not corporate teams. It was personal.

I recently purchased a nice 96 Corvette because they are so cheap vs the older muscle cars. I can't begin to work on it! But my friend can.
