Anyone know anything about PCP Air Rifles

I’m interested in getting a precision Air a Rifle setup. Anyone have any guidance on where I can find quality information as well as high quality 2nd hand setups?

Air Rifle is all new to me. Any guidance is appreciated.

Air tank fill at scuba or fire station, or buy a compressor$$$$$$$$
Tank good for ten years, value used based on years remaining.
Test and recertify is possible but not all tanks.
Good pellets can be expensive at $0.20+ each
Others (crosman) more reasonable shoot well.
177 fun, 22 whacks harder, 25 is a cannon
Bigger is to each his own.
Quieting devices are good as that much air can be louder than a 22 rimfire, shhhh
Benjamin marauder best bang for the buck, good starter, good long term also.
Will do 85% what the expensive ones will. And it is MOUSE FART QUIET
Many good rifles, many improvements, lots of gizmos and bs to wade thru though.
Read forums for 2 months then buy carefully.
 
If you're looking to compete, you will need a .177 cal setup. I would start with the folks over at TargetTalk.org: they're dedicated to the ISSF scene, and there's usually a fair number of used packages for sale with the end of the school year/competitive season.

One thing to know about the tanks: depending on where you plan to compete (if you plan to compete), you will want to make sure that your tank is still within that 10 year window. In addition, I would recommend checking the Rules for whatever body or bodies you plan to compete under: ISSF (and by extension USA Shooting) have tightened up Air Rifle rules in recent years, so a used rifle may or may not still be compliant.
 
There's a lot choices out there and a lot is a matter of personal taste and what one wants out of an air rifle. There's a lot of junk out there too, so Rustytigwire give GOOD advice in taking a couple months of research before deciding.

I know very little about them, but I feel Bengamin Marauder's are good one's to be at the top of your list . . . I like this one:

I wouldn’t recommend the Air Force Talon / Condor for small critters, if that’s your interest. They are absolutely accurate and powerful enough, but the high scope mounting makes them even pickier on range estimation, than a conventional air rifle.

Solid advice on reading forums for several months before making a purchase. Any recommendations on quality forums?
 
I subscribe to the "buy once, cry once" philosophy. Mainly interested in varmint shooting out to 100 or so along with target shooting on the range. I don't want the rifle to be loud and I'm not hung up on caliber. I don't mind paying for quality. Ryan
 
I had a Marauder a few years back with a hand pump. Worked well for me, and usually had to pump it up every 25 shots or so. More often would probably resulted in more consistent velocities, but I was happy with the accuracy I was getting for what I was using it for.
It was nice and quiet, but I ultimately got rid of it because it was HEAVY.

I have a Benjamin Discovery that has been around for a while. It holds it's charge & I use a hand pump. Crossman 22cal HP pellets kills groundhogs and rabbits just fine. My yard range is 30yds and it knocks the middle out of air gun paper targets shooting off my knee. Those pellets are $6.00 for 500 at Walmart. This virus has me shooting the crap out of that thing.......Best of luck with your choice.

With Air Rifles you can expect to spend at least $500 for something that will last and provide good performance. I personally like pumping with my Hill hand pumps ( MK III, MKIV), and I'm a healthy 66 yrs old. Most don't like pumping but to each his own. There are electric compressors that have varying life expectancies and costs.

Unlike powder burners, all PCPs have many moving parts and they have to withstand between 2000 and 4000 psi. That's why they cost so much. Out to 100 yards puts you in either the high end .22 cal guns or something in .25 or .30 which are more stable out that far. There are guns in the larger calibers that are set up for slugs instead of the standard diabolo shaped pellets. That's what most of the top BR shooters are transitioning to and mostly in .30.

I just purchased a FX Dreamline Tactical in .22, when the 'shelter in place' took effect. I'm having so much fun I also purchased a FX Impact MK2 with power plenum. I'm all in with scuba tank and air comperssor. I set up a 20 yd range in the back yard, and the .22 with modulator is whisper quiet. The .25 not so much. Check out the videos on youtube, there are a bunch, prairie dogs and airguns, and videos by Utah Airguns. I purchased both airguns from UA, they are good people to work with.

The other reason why I purchased these two is because there is a place in Northern Cal where my son-in-law and I shoot ground squirrels and these will be perfect. And if need be, I can convert the .22 to .25 with a barrel swap and some tuning, win,win.

Great info, yes I realize they are not cheap and it’s not just the rifle you have to invest in...pumps, tanks, etc. I was looking really hard at the FX Impact MK2 in .22. I’ve heard all the good stuff, but what about the cons? Reliability? Scope height above bore an issue? Is the buttstock comfortable? I’ll PM you, you sound like you shoot the way I like to shoot. I just sold an fx crown .25 setup to get a Vudoo. That thing was sweet and quite. Barrel shroud slid out for suppressed. There are many nice rifles out there. Check out the new slug barrels for them.

None of my 22lr’s will shoot as accurate as that crown did with no wind at 100yds. I will be surprised if the Vudoo does. Haven’t shot it yet.
It’s truly amazing how accurate those air rifles are.
Also I recommend getting at least 100cf tank to refill, the smaller ones didn’t fill to max bar but a cpl times.

nothing cheap about pcps.

I just build a Kidd based 1022 that shoots little tiny holes, I’m sure the Voodoo will be amazing. How was the resale value on your setup? I would have defiantly been interested in it. Ryan

Go to Pyramidair.com and find their blog. Scroll down on the home page and you will see an icon for the blog. It is sort of hard to navigate but the right hand column of links is useful. You can also type in a search query. Tons of info on getting started. Also just do Google searches for pcp equipment. If you find blog info about what it takes to get into pcp that is good info. There is also info on what types of maintenance is required for pcp.

You can buy hand pumps that claim to be able to pump up to 4000 psi. If the rifle has a fairly small air tank (200 cc or less) you can pump it back to full charge in about 15 minutes. It takes a lot of strokes but a hand pump is only around $200 versus $550 to $700 or more for a tank. Then you have to find a place that can fill the tank to 4500 psi. You will also need to learn about regulated air rifles versus non-regulated air rifles. Non-regulated air rifles have unique "power" or pellet velocity curves that will affect point of impact. they have a "sweet spot" on the curve where you can get around 30 shots that are fairly consistent. The curve and number of shots depends a lot on the caliber you choose. The smaller the pellet the less air is needed and therefore more "good" shots per fill.

Airguns of Arizona and Utah Airguns have pre-owned rifles.

PCP can be very accurate, quiet, and basically recoil free. A ton of fun to shoot. Very inexpensive after the initial purchase of PCP equipment.
