Anyone doing Long Gong here?

I started late summer and enjoy it immensely.
It’s a benchrest style match where you shoot at 300 yds with a 22lr. Bipod in front and a rear bag. No other style or rests allowed.
There’s a FB page with 4000 plus followers. It’s being played internationally now too
Developed in Maine around 3 years ago and it’s really starting to catch on.
There are 3 gongs 8”, 6” and a 4”
Points 1-2-3 according
You shoot 5 strings of 10 shots.
A perfect string is 27 points.
Bolt action seem to rule but you are welcome to shoot anything provided it’s 22lr.

See the FB page for rules and scoring sheets.

We’ve recently starting shooting it here in western PA. I really enjoy it , reading the wind and strategizing make it a challenge. So far, I have yet to see anyone shoot a “clean” relay.

Having a back stop that you can see you misses is critical. I friend and I tried it for the first time in an open field, with a fair cross wind and just the 8" plate. We had to resort to spotting for each other before hitting anything. But that's not what the game is.

I’ve been doing RIMFIRE matches at our range similar to the game you’re playing since 2016. I decide what yardage to shoot, 275 yards out to 365 yards, and put 3 targets at that yardage; the difference being I do not put the 3 targets right next to each other. This changes the angle of the wind and makes it more challenging to the shooters. At 275 I use 6”, 4” and 3” targets, at the 300 yardage I’ll use the 8”, 6” and 4” array and at 365 I’ll go 9”, 7” and 5”. Challenging to say the least.

I have and it is not easy ! Texas wind and mirage is very tricky ! you need downrange camera or something to see hits better. Also do NOT USE AR500 1/2" steel for a 22LR . the thinner plates center hung will rock or ding loud enough to see and hear hits !!!! also do not take your Marlin with high velocity ammo and expect to do any good ! LOL

If you do not mind my asking. What range in W PA do you shoot Long Gong?

I tried it by myself a few weeks ago. It's dang sure entertaining. And sure isn't a cake walk. Sucks using ar500 steel. If I hadn't fresh painted them, I wouldn't have known I ever hit

For those who don't use FB, can you go into more detail on the shot sequence and scoring? The 27 points on 10 shots stumps me.Thanks

Q1: is there a designated sighter period? Based on time? Based on maximum number of shots?

Q2: in scaling target size to 200y, targets would be 5.33, 4, and 2.66 inches. Correct? or would they be a bit smaller based on a related thread that rimfire dispersion as distance increases is not linear?
Edit: AM I overthinking this? just looking to be consistent with other ranges that are limited to 200y. Thanks

Another variation I use is to put one 4” target at each of the following distances; 100, 200 and 300 yards and then shoot using basically the same rules. We do not allow sighters and shoot prone using bipods/squeeze bags. Due to time restraints, shooters get 2 minutes per magazine

Having jumped in the NRL22 rabbit hole a number of years ago this is next on my list.

I am however, going to get my popcorn out and wait for all the naysayers in this sight to show up and tell you a 22 isn’t predictable at 300 yards.

An individual texted me about my gong sizes. My local range has only 200 yds. Therefore we use 5, 4 & 3” gongs. The best ten shot relay I’ve personally shot is a twenty. Hopefully that score will increase this summer.

I shoot long range steel shooter. I like knockdown steel best, but I have been shooting Long Gong for about 10 months at my local range. I have 8", 6" and 4" at 300yds. 4", 3" , 2" and 1" at 200yds. It is easy to set up and shoot.
