Anybody use R17 in 6-284??

6.5x284 is hard on barrels and you want to try a double base powder through a smaller hole? I would be tempted to try H1000 with heavier bullets, as it is cool burning.

Jumped past the 11 twist, so limited to lighter bullets, but RL-17 is double base, will vary with temperature and probably is harder on barrel throats than a single base powder.

You already have a barrel burner, may as well have some fun, I say go for it. It can be a neat powder to use, not sure it's reputation totally deserved.

I have a 11 twist 6-284 and have been using 4831 & H100v but was wondering bout R17?

RL-17 would be WAY too fast. It is optimum in 6Dasher. I recommend trying RL-26. It is in the appropriate speed range and is the only Alliant other powder besides RL-17 made by Nitrochemie of Switzerland. You can read all about their special properties in the archives of this website.
Using either of these powders has been documented on another website as virtually doubling barrel life, because much of the "burn" occurs beyond the throat.

I use to shoot that cartridge . Re#17 and 87gr Vmax was ultra fast 3600+ . Now I shoot the 6mm Creedmoor ,just a few very few moor elevation clicks and the Prairie Dogs still explode when hit.

He has a 11” twist barrel so he will not be shooting heavies requiring a slower burn rate powder. Re 17 will work fine for the class of bullets he will be limited to shooting.

Running the numbers through QL w/87gr Vmax, RL17 and RL26 are pretty close on velocity but RL26 holds about a 50fps advantage over RL17. Fill ratio, IMO, is better with RL26 too.

My 6-284 only has a 1-12tw so I'm even more limited on bullets. I shoot the 75gr Vmax w/H4350, it's not a super speedy load, right around 3600fps, but it stacks them up into tiny little groups so I've never really tried much else. One of these days I plan to give RL26 a try with those same 75's and see if I get them to group as well because I'm probably giving up 150+ fps by using H4350 compared to what RL26 can do.

I'm, obviously, a little partial but I think the 6-284 is about the easiest and best of all the 6mm's.

I'm using RL17 in my 6.6-284; in short, I'm getting excellent accuracy and great velocity, the underside is that based upon others reports I can't expect much in terms of barrel life. The powder is cruel on barrels and that's being kind. I don't expect much more than 1,000-1200 rounds before its time to change barrels.

I've done ladder tests with RL17 in both my 6mmAI and 22-250 as well and I'm getting excellent results both in terms of velocity and accuracy but the underlying down side is that I know that throat and barrel life are going to be compromised.
