My friend just built me a 284, 26" barrel, Rem 700 LA and HS precision stock. We took it out yesterday and it shot pretty well. I tried a little R17 with some spare Fail safes just to try it and they shot well too. The bullets I would like to shoot are the 168vlds with H4831sc and also try 162 AMaxs with some R17.

I have searched the internet, but found very little load data for 168vlds with R17 and a ~26" barrel. It seems most are using a 30+. Thanks guys.

I recently finished a 28" 284 bbl for my DTA SRS, and had some really good results with a batch of old JLK168VLDs using RL17. The initial load I tried was pushing moly'd 168s at nearly 2950fps, and with very good accuracy. However, that load resulted in loose primer pockets in brand new WW brass, so I had to back it off. Tried the same charge wt with H162AMaxes, but they didn't shoot well at all with that warm a load, so I went back to H4831 with them. In my Bartlein 5R, the 162s shoot best at 2800fps or less, which is easily done with either 4831 or SC.

Wish Swampy was still making his 168s, but they're discontinued. Bergers are probably nearly as good, but I'm still looking for the right combination of powder charge & seating depth to get them to shoot as good as the JLKs did.
