Any turkey hunters out there?

WOW!! I used to shoot 3 full oz. (nitro. co.) in the ten gauge. Definetely no need for that with the latest advancements!! That load maims on both ends....

The older I get, the lighter I seem to prefer my hunting rifles and shotguns so when my daughter decided to stop turkey hunting a few years back, I started using her shotgun. I have taken several spring birds with that short barreled Remington 11-87, 20 gauge youth model. The shotgun has a Burris Fast-Fire red dot mounted on it. This year after hearing all the "hype" about Tungsten Super Shot, I decided to test some and see what the limits of this combination were.

Tungsten is 1.5 times as dense as lead and is also more dense than "heavy shot". This density allows you to go to smaller shot sizes, normally 8 or 9 shot, giving you many more pellets in the load, with the same energy and penetration as lead shot approximately 4 sizes larger. 8's are equal to lead 4's and 9's are equal to lead 5's.

I located a company called Apex Ammunition and ordered what they call their Pattern Pack. This pack contained three different 20 gauge loads so you can test for the best performance with your gun/choke combination. I can say that the people at Apex are very knowledgeable and they provide great customer service. Now this ammo is not cheap, but it's not like you shoot a bunch of ammo hunting Spring gobblers. I purchased the .555" Indian Creek choke that Apex recommended and I was amazed with the performance of this combination. I started at 40 yards and quickly realized 50 yards would have to be tested.

The following target was shot with a 3" 20 gauge load with 1 5/8 oz. of 9 shot. The inner ring is 10" and the outer ring is 20". 333 pellets in the 10' ring. This test was at 50 yards!

I thought maybe fellow turkey hunters would be interested in my results. Thanks-Dave.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!

That is the best pattern I've ever seen. Wish I could get that out of my Muller, Caesar, Browning or CZ chokes.

As far as turkey hunting, up until last year we had them all over the place. Up to 50 at a time around the house. Nothing so sophisticated needed to bag them. You could damn near walk up to them and knock them over the head with a 2x4. Then the last two years they are still around but very cagey for some reason. Maybe the neighbors were beating some sense into their thick skulls.

My oldest son got his first turkey this past Saturday during the youth season here in NY. His twin sister beat him to the punch amd got her first turkey last year! It is so stinking exciting when it all comes together and the kids get some trigger time!20220423_065657.jpg

If you had one of those “Unique” turkey calls maybe you wouldn’t have to be concerned about shooting 50yards.

So I posted this in 2018, and it’s ironic it got going again. In 2018 I started applying for one of the the extremely difficult to draw Goulds tags in Arizona. After five years, I got lucky and drew one of eight NR and less than 100 total resident and non-resident tags for the state. Today was first day of my hunt. It was outstanding as we had multiple birds gobbling and heard literally hundreds of gobbles. This one caps off the Royal Slam which is the Eastern, Merriam’s, Rio, Osceola and Goulds turkey sub-species. I will need to make another spot on the wall!

I train them to walk up too the house ,that way it's easier on ME :)

Seriously ; We have all manner of critters which walk fly swim here and all around us .
Bald Eagles ,Osprey ,Golden Eagles ,various Hawks , Partridge ,Pheasants ,Turkey's , Dove , 3 maybe 4 types of Grouse . Most of our Chucker and Quail are South West of us . Coyotes ,Bob Cats, Raccoon ,Mountain Lion , Deer ,Mules & White Tail and Moose . #10-20 miles Bear ,we could have them here but I've NOT seen them around our place . Moose oh yeah ,standing in our driveway ,swimming across the river with Calf .
That's Not a log floating down the river ,it's Moose Mom going 75 yards down river after Junior finally made shore . Calves squeal when frightened ,as I'm assuming it was it's first full bath , however Mom was Quick to catch up and all was well again . I wish I'd had MY camera instead of My Phone's camera . Unless You carry it ready at a moments notice ,things happen to quickly to catch on film .

I don't recall ever using anything smaller than #6 shot and normally use #4 Nickle ,as it lessens shot picking .
#20 or 12 works for ME .
