Any new 2017 builds?

Brought a T3x stainless Lite with 22" sporter in .260Rem which I am using as the base for building a PSR and F-Open rifle. Since Buying I have payed with it at 100M, 300M and 600M and it makes a fine hunting rifle but does not like a 10 shot stage as the barrel heats up significantly and groups spread out accordingly. So I'm building it up along the following lines:

- the factory stock has been replaced by a KRG Whisky-3 stock
- a Vector 6-9 bipod (a Harris clone...and pretty good) has been added
- 20MOA rail
- Niteforce NXS 8x32x56

Next iteration will involve replacing the factory sporter barrel with a Hardy 29" Med varmint barrel and potentially a new a new trigger.

As this is my first project rifle any advice or ideas from those more experienced is very welcome:)

Another barrel for my varmint switch barrel gun. Lapua making .222 Rem brass, so I had to have JGS make me a modified .222 reamer. Whidden dies based on reamer print. Shoulder went to 30° and moved forward a good bit. Taper reduced to only .010...sort of an Ackley like. This adds 1.8 gr powder and I hoped for 3500 fps with a 52 gr bullet. Krieger 14 tw HV 30", Stiller Predator V, jewell 1.5 oz, Shurley Bros #11 thumb hole, and Sightron 8-32 dot reticle. Early testing is fantastic! IMR 4198 and H 4198 with various 52 gr bullets making very small holes...at 3500 fps. Ghogs beware!

Hoping to build a tactical/prone gun in 6.5x47L this year. Either a trued single shot R700 receiver or one of the custom clones. Thinking a 28-30" barrel.

Also looking to build an iron sight match rifle upper on a pinned A2 receiver.

Out of curiosity, anyone even remotely interested in building for these cartridges?
.218 Bee,
.219 Zipper
.219 Donaldson
.225 Win
6mm Intl (now that we have the 6mm XC)
6mm Rem
.256 win
6.5 Mannlicher Carcano
6.5 Mannlicher-Schoenauer(sp?)
7mm Sharpe & Hart

It's surprising how frequently I get a request for some of these chambers. The Carcano and the .256 Win. are almost non-existent and not high on anyone's list of interesting cartridges. The 6.5 M-S, on the other hand, is gaining traction once again, not only for making rifles from the original 1903 Greek actions but for re-barreling those older M-S sporters from Europe. The case capacity and longer neck make them ideal as 6.5 cartridges.

The 7x61 S&H Super was simply a victim of timing here in the U.S. Remington pushed it right off the radar with the introduction of the 7mm Rem. Mag., but for those of us with original Schultz & Larson rifles, the cartridge is still alive. Many of these original rifles used slower twist rates so shorter, lighter bullets are required, none of those extra long, super VLDs for this cartridge! Strictly hunting bullets.

I get a surprising number of calls for the 6mm Rem. even with the dearth of brass these days. But like the original chambers for the Carcano and the M-S, they need an intermediate length action. Until recently, this usually meant finding an older military or Oberndorf Mauser to use. There are others but these were the most plentiful. Now though, we have the Defiance XM action which is made for these cartridges or the short magnums with the bullets seated out.

I think you'll find that many of the older cartridges are still viable even though they are usually under the radar for shooters whose interests lay with the competition sports.

Regards.

Building a 12 pound( including scope)6.5 x 47L to compete in thousand yard VBR varmint shoot in Ridgway, Pennsylvania. Borden action,Lilja barrel, McMillan edge stock, Leupold 35 power competition scope. Should be completed by mid March.

Borden Alpine, MCM Gamescout, Timney Calvin, 7mm-08 chambered in X-Caliber Rem Sporter countour. Spinning up a 3 groove 8.5 twist, gonna go heavy just for fun.

I've got a new FTR build in the works:

GRS X-Eater Stock
Kelbly Panda F-Class .308 Action
Krieger Heavy Palma 31" Barrel
Bix'n & Andy Trigger
Bullet Central Adjustable Trigger Hanger
Kelbly Rings
Sightron SIII 10-50X60 Riflescope

I'm just waiting on the barrel and I'll be ready to hand over all the components to my gunsmith.

I've got 2 going and I'll probably be done with full builds for this year. I've got a Kelbly Fclass action and older stock that I'm having a straight 284 put on it and I bought one of the Borden drop ports from Alex a few months ago that is off getting a 22 dasher throated for 90's put on it and it'll ride in a new McMillan Kestros stock once it get done. I also have a 6.5x47 that (we've never gotten along) is getting it's freebore extended before I scrap the whole barrel and start over. I'm sure my dasher will need rebarreled this season.

From the looks of this I better get a Christmas card from my gunsmith ;)

Building my first .243. It is going to be a blend of old and new. Came across a 6 digit 1964 Remington action. Going to have it trued and a kreiger barrel around 20" + brake (looking at one of muzzle brake&more's mini beast). Got a Remington special varmint wood stock from a member here. It will be inletted for PT&G stealth DBM running Alpha mags. Looking thru a Leupold VX-6 3-18x44 sitting in old school dual dovetail bases and rings.
Going to send it all off to the smith once the bases arrive.
Cant wait, this will be my coyote gun.

I too went the Tikka T3 route - in the hope of building a budget ISSF 300M Standard Rifle:

It begins as a T3 Sporter chambered in .308. I added an old MEC Contact III buttplate, Champions Choice bloop tube, a Centra 22mm front sight tunnel, a Tec-Hro light rear sight attached via a Weaver tip-off rail. Its rounded out with an Anschutz handstop, and a Champions Choice mirage band.

It is just making the 5.5kg weight limit, but holding better than 1/2 MOA @ 200yds w/ a scope. I have yet to test it @ 300 yds - I'm still waiting for those targets to arrive...

I usually treat myself to one rifle per year...but I have been doing it for long enough that it is getting hard to come up with another rifle I just gotta have. Never imagined I would be saying that 20 years ago!!!
Here is just how bad it is getting...last year I built a 760 Remington pump in 260...I put Model Six stocks on it. I have always liked the lines of the 760. I also put together a pre-64 70 in 280AI with a Bartlein fluted barrel and McMillan hunter stock.
Just today I received a Pac-Nor #1 contour 1 in 8 twist 7mm barrel. I am thinking a 700 SA stainless lightweight in 7mm-08 in some nice fancy walnut stock. There is just something about stainless and walnut.
Who knows...by the time I actually build it into something it might end up being some other idea. I can promise you it will NOT be a Mannlicher. They're like many custom knives, they make me vomit.

Just advising on a friend's build this year: a humble rebarrel of a Rem 700 in .223. 1 in 8" twist Palma contour 30" throated for an 80 SMK seated to 2.500" OAL. Likely an HS Precision stock. Main duty: F-Class at 300-600 with an occasional stroll at 800.

IMAG0170-1600x1200.jpg First trip to the range. Rem 700 LA Brux 30" 8.5 twist straight 284 with Jewel trigger. Throated for Sierra 183s. Modified Boyds Pro Varmint. Got to upgrade the optics but so far turning out to shoot pretty good.

Good out to 500 meter (547 yds.) on groundhogs and crows, 26" barrel, VV 133. Never tried any other powder, so higher may be possible.
Thanks. I cant make my mind up but hearing that is sure interesting. Have you started a ar build yet? I figure several of you Pn residents will be building a hunting rig or two now.
