Another perspective on Raton

Turbulent Turtle

F-TR competitor
I shot both FNCN and FCWC and I was expecting to have a higher score at the FCWC by virtue of the fact 1/3 is shot at 800, 1/3 at 900 and 1/3 at 1000 (yeah, yeah, plus an extra 5 shots at 1000.) The FCNC was 100% at 1000 yards.

I shot 96% at FCNC and 90% at FCWC, so much for theory.

(*** NOTE: major revision further down. ***)

Then I did some further analysis. If you take the score of the winner of each match in the FCNC and FCWC and add them for a score, this putative "winner" shot at 9.8% for the FCNC and 98.5% for the FCWC. There is very little difference, but the FCWC "winners score" is slightly lower than FCNC.

Now, if we look at the eventual champions, the FCNC champion shot at 97.7% for that championship and the FCWC champion shot at 94.7% for that championship. That's a 3% difference and I would say that's quite significant.

I also noticed that the FCNC champion was consistent day after day at 97.8%, 97.8% and 97.5%. On the other hand, the FCWC champion shot 98.2% and 91.6%; a significant change day to day.

So it would appear that day 2 of the FCWC was arguably the most difficult day for the individual championship for the entire week. I'm wondering how big a role fatigue might have had in this.

I know fatigue played a part with Sebastian and myself.
We were worn out before we even arrived in Raton, but that didn't stop us from having a great time ;D

Never mind. I just realized that you cannot do a straight percentage comparison between FCNC and FCWC. The points you lose in either format are the same but you start with 75 points more in FCNC. I need to retouch my spreadsheet.

I'm pretty resistant to heat. Summer is my friend and the only good thing about fall/winter is hunting season (it's my opinion). That said, by the time I lay down for the last match on Sunday I was toasted. Looking back I know that about 10 shots in was pretty lost with no hope of finding my way out. I was just mentally out of gas, and it showed.

I don't know what your reassessed spreadsheet will say, but in my case I was worn out and facing a 20 hour drive home.

Ah, that makes a lot more sense now. And we must remember to add 100 points on match 7.

In the FCWC, the "winners scores" works out to 99.3%. The FCWC champion shot at 99.1% on the first day and 95.8% on day 2 for a total of 97.4% for the aggregate.

My numbers shot up to 95.5% and 94.4% for a total of 94.8%.

So Day 1 of the FCWC was the best day at 99.6%, while day 2 of the FCNC was the worst day @ 98.4%, from the "winners scores" perspective.

There was several factors that separate the 2 matches. Instead of giving yourself a headache could you post some pictures like last year so we can walk down memory lane?

Here ya go...

The aftermath of the 'wet' relay... a large wookie-shaped mud-angel on the firing line ;)

You will likely find that there were others in the top 50 who had similar scores to the top 10 for 5 of the matches but then got smashed by 10 minutes of bad weather in one range, knocking them out of contention. When you consider a national championship goes for 8 ranges, I would have thought a world championship should go for more than 6 ranges. Is this likely to be changed in future world championships?

Of course, you are right. I forgot to the hypotenuse of left side of the range into consideration and I think that if I bias that with the age of the referee I should be able to prove it.

But enough silliness, the problem with pictures is that I have 5-600 of them from Raton and they were all taken with my new Nikon which creates 22MP pictures. I was also playing with my new zoom lens and compressing or reaching into the crowds. All that to say that it's a lot of work (time) to go through the pictures and clean them up and make them presentable here. I'll think of something.

You take nice pictures Denny. With the lay of the land there was no way to get the entire firing line in one photo much less see it all from anywhere but the range officer's platform.

Here is one of some small unknown team that showed up to play.

It looks great in full size, but I had to shrink it here.

Thanks Denys, I didn't notice the 17 ft giant walking around with a camera!!

Aussies certainly like the underdog title but to be quite honest I think we surprised ourselves!

I would love some photos if I could. I imagine this will not happen too often in a lifetime and I got caught up in the activities so not many photos.

Cheers,
Dave McNamara

It's not the size of the lens, it's how you use it.

I cleaned up and test-printed an 11X17 picture of the USA F-Open team on the firing line, it really came out nice. This new camera is really great.

I have about 20-30 pictures of the Australian teams and I will see about cleaning those up. Would you be the contact person for the Australians? I hate to send these ginormous files via email. I might look at some file sharing service somewhere. If you want to print any of these pictures, you want the full size in fine JPEG. Each picture is about 10 megabytes.

It would be neat if there was an area at Accurateshooter.com where I could upload these pictures over time and let people select the ones they want and get the original file.

Like Dave Mc, I would love some of your pics. I to was caught up in the comp and had no time to get anything on camera.

Cheers
