Another one of those noobie posts about his new rifle... Savage f class in 6br

First I'd like to say hi, I'm pretty new to the bench rest game, and have been lurking on the forum for some time. I started reloading a few years ago with my Savage BVSS 22-250 and been loving it. About a year ago i stated looking in to a bench gun.. and well if all goes as planned i should have all i need to start loading up my first rounds in 6br, in a few weeks. Being a Savage fan i picked up one of their F class guns, and just can't wait to put some rounds through it. Here is a quick run down on my setup, Savage F Class (6br), Sightron SIII 10x50x60 FCH, EGW HD 20moa rail, Sinclair Gen II rest w/ windage & Edgewood front bag. I've just ordered up a set of comp. redding dies, and some lapua brass. I plan on using varget powder with CCI 450 BR's, and SMK 107's to start. If anyone has and pointers/comments I'd love to hear them. Also a quick thanks to the users of this forum.. there is a ton of information here and i really appreciate it!

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you are well on your way to "one hole" groups! The only thing I would advise you to get is a quality rear bag, it's one of the essential parts of gear that can make the difference in the accuracy potential of your rifle.

Yup, I agree with Eric you are well on your way but you do need a good Edgewood Mini-Gator rear bag. And get some Berger 105 gr and some Hornady 105gr "A" Max's and you will be all set

Thanks guys... I did forget to mention that i do have a Edgewood minigator (tall w/2" ear & 3/4" spacing). I've been reading good things about the Berger's as you mentioned, might have to give them a go. Thanks again

Dont be discouraged if the thing doesnt shoot bugholes if the first 100 rds. I used to have the same model, and loved it. It just took me around 200 rounds to get all the ruff spots out of the barrel. I still have my groups I shot with mine at 600. I got a three shot 1.6 inch group. And 3/4 inch group at 300. I didnt even have it bedded. They are great guns and Im kind of kicking my self for selling it because now Im way deep in my new Bat 6BRX. Still waiting on it.

i have the same gun , well not same one but one like it. anyways i ended up shooting 107 smk, cci br primers, varget at 30.4 grains( as always start lower and work up for your gun) and it shot best seated 10 thou in lands. played with action torque some and it has shot a couple of .4 to.5 groups at 300. my only complaint is the rear bottom of the stock is not the same width all the way down. good luck

mr 70 --be shure to try RL 15, it is better in my 12 F class than Varget. Hope your able to reach the lands , mine was deeeeeeeeeeeep throated when I got it, finally had it set back and rechambered with a match reamer. Best thing I ever did, is excellent Now.

Thanks for the tips... how many rounds (roughly) should i run through it before i sart working on load development?

IMHO I'd start right in on LD while 'breaking in the barrel'.

No sense wasting consumables while doing a 'break-in'. At least you could get an idea of where she likes to be. ;)

DITTO on the RE15. My Savage Benchrest would not digest varget at all. My go-to load is 30.6 re15 with the berger 105s and 31.3 re15 with the 80 grain bergers. The downside to re15 is that it is very dirty burning, but keeps its utmost accuracy through at least 50 rounds.
