New Savage in 6br chamber dimensions?

I'm thinking about getting a Savage 12 Bench Rest in 6BR and don't want to turn necks at this time. Can I just load up some Lapua brass and go shoot or do I have to turn the necks before I shoot?

rvoutdoorsman,

I have a Savage LRPV 6BR 8 tw, it has a 0.272" and needs no neck turning.

I have a Savage 6BR LRPV in 12 twist, and 26" barrel. Fired Lapua cases measure right around .2696". I have not measured the chamber but I understand the cases spring back about 0.001", so that would suggest a neck size of about .2706". My loaded rounds measure about 0.269", so a nice tight fit. Necks were not turned, and this is a lot of the older cardboard box Lapua that has a thicker neck.

This is in the range or even slightly tighter than a custom no turn neck chamber. On the other hand I am less happy with the length of the throat. It seems to be a bit on the long side, and I'm having trouble getting enough seating depth on the lighter and higher BC type bullets.

You should be fine. As Mark said The specs on the savage are a 272 neck so you won't have to turn the necks. I think they use same reamer spec for 12 twist and 8 twist. As Ron said a little long in the throat for the 12 twist but good for the longer bullets if you have the 8 twist. Load and go and enjoy.

Mine is a model 12 bench rest and I've got almost identical dimensions as Ron AKA
Barrel is 1in 8 twist and 29"

Thanks for the information, now I feel more comfortable about buying the rifle. I have a .243 I'd like to fix up but I don't want to deal with a long distance gunsmith. With this factory rifle it's pretty much ready to go. Now all I need is the money.
