Another home made stock thread

I'll try to keep you all entertained . I've only got two stocks in the works this one and one for a 1022. I'll put some 1022 stuff up once I get this one ready to prime. I plan on making another benchrest pistol with a wood stock but I have to make the action first . I'm still in the planning stages on that one.

Time for the weekly update . I got the forend figured out and and mostly done down to the final sanding for primer. Spent way too much time trying to get hardware located for the trigger guard and butt plate, Finally found some chrome plated screws at southerlands in the right sizes and right head style

I also got my 1022 stock almost ready for primer. I find the 1022 really difficult to inlet for so I do a stacked laminate for those The top layer inlets for the action and the next one down gets inleted for the trigger assembly then glued together. There is also an aluminum plate imbedded in the trigger assembly piece for the rear lug to thread into then the two are epoxyed together

An aluminum pillar goes in the hole for the front. The rest is just more pieces glued up to make the rest of the stock.
I found an interesting stock design and I used that for the inspiration for the butt end

So I scribed some guide lines like I did on the other one and went to work with the sanding drums in the cordless drill to kinda get things roughed in and then started on the serpentine lines

I just sketched it in then made a tape line to sand up too

When that gets really close spray the guide coat on and sand to match the contour. Lots of guide coat and lots of sanding with a hard block and soon it starts to look like what I had pictured . Then turn it over and do the other side. The stock is not symmetrical so they don't have to match but the lines have to flow right and that's the hard part. It has to be pleasing to look at with no weird angles that don't fit.

So that was my weekend, ordered paint and primer that shot almost 300 bucks and some 1022 parts that finished it off.

I really like the shape as it is coming along.
Could you show a picture of the setup you are using for shaping? I've never tried a drum sander.

A drum sander is just a round sandpaper sleeve on a rubber mandrel that fits in a drill. I use that to get things roughed into shape. Then comes all the manual work using anything that's round that sandpaper will stick to. Pvc pipe works good, pex pipe, deep sockets for the barrel channel , blocks of wood and hard foam sanding pads. there is also a 3 inch air grinder, 6 inch da sander and an 8 inch da sander. Thats pretty much it, lots of elbow grease and a good imagination.

Not much happening except sanding, re sanding and more sanding. However they are both in primer now the 1022 stock is ready for final sand then color and clear. The bolt action stock is one prime and block behind it.

Well yesterday was paint day , I was hoping for a nice day so I could paint outside however it was cold and raining so I did this inside my shop. I have never buffed a clearcoat finish so this will be a new experience. I've tried a few times but never been happy with the results. I bought some compound from the same place I got my basecoat and have been playing with it this morning It looks like it just might work. I used my HVLP gun to spray this and I've never liked the finish I get with it but inside the shop I didn't have much choice it would be much to foggy with a conventional gravity gun. So anyway enough excuses This is what I've got.

No doubt it will look great in the sun but for now all I have is clouds.

I've been thinking of trying to make a benchrest style stock for myself just to try out. I don't compete so it would be a fun rig for me. Thanks for taking the time to walk us through your process. Nice work!

I don't compete, well I did once but since I moved back to kansas there really isn't anything up here as far as competitions. To tell the truth I probably have as much fun making guns as I do shooting them plus when it's bitterly cold outside I'd much rather be in the shop carving a bolt action receiver out of bar stock than anything outside.
I hope I've shown enough of my trade secrets to inspire other people to to make there own stuff. I really enjoy watching other peoples projects because the learning goes both ways.
