Another 6.5x47 powder question...

Thanks Mudder,
I have a bunch of RL-15 which has worked great with my 123 Scenars.

I fired several Sierra GameKing 130gr whch i reloaded for hunting, and at 100 yards were more accurate than anything else i have shot, including the Scenars. Now, i realize that the GameKings are hunting bullets and dont have the ballistics the Scenars have at longer ranges. But it did make me think that may be 130gr bullets in general will shoot better out of my rifle, and it would be worth to load a few Bergers 130 and give them a try....

Friends,

New guy here from Texas. I have been lurking for a little awhile, and found your forum to be very educational. I hope i can contribute in the future as i learn more.

I had a 6.5x47 built recently with a Kreiger 1:8 26" barrel. I have been to the range a couple of times and tried an assortment of bullets with RL-15 and CCI450 primers. Scenars 123gr on top of 38.8 gr of RL-15 have given me the best results so far. Heavier bullets in the 136 and 140 range have not shot well; but then again, I'm still experimenting.

I have seen many posts out there indicating that Varget seems to do very well with this caliber. Varget is hard to find this days...so is RL-15.

My questions is this...has any one tried IMR4064? Its very close to Varget in my 308... So why is it not being widely used in this caliber? I've yet to come across any data for IMR4064. You would think that if Varget worked so would IMR4064....

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

What free bore is your chamber and what powder did you try with the heavy bullets, R-15?

mine loves 130 VLDs and 37.5 RL15,,140 Hybirds and 40 grs H4350,,absolute best load is 39 RL15 and 123 Scenar,,8 twist 28.25 inch HV Bartlien on Stiller Tac 30 action,

I dont know what the free bore of my chamber is. How do I measure it? Ill try to have an answer asap. I did try 140s with RL-15, but the 123s/RL-15 did much better...about 1/3" groups. Now i have a lot of RL-15 but i was curious if 4064 would be any good.

Agreed. So far my best loads have been 123 scenars on top of 38.8 gr RL-15. However, i have only shot this new rifle 4 times, so I suspect things are still settling down and should get a liitle better.

I noticed Brunos has some Berger 130s... 😀

I've almost only used VV-N140 with OKAY results. When did my first load develompent @ 100 meters for the 100 grs Lapua Scenar this was the result:

I've also used this powder for 120 grs Sierra ProHunter and 130 grs Berger Hunting with very good results. The ProHunter seems to shoot 1/2 MOA @ 100 all day long if i do my job...

Note that i primary shoot of bipod with hunting support bag on the rear. I never shoot from a rest, and usualy very litle short range!

Here are pictures of my rifle... very happy with it:

And a ladder test i did @ 500 meters:
