Annealing

Good Afternoon,
I am going to give annealing a try.
I am not sure it is necessary to spend multiple hundreds or thousands of dollars on some gizmo though....
I think I want to start with the torch and cordless drill method first.....
So what degrees of tempilaq do I need, 700?
Thanks
Joe

Do as old_heli_logger does. You need to be around 1050-1100F to anneal. Red for 1-2 seconds and stop. Tempilaq is not supposed to be used with a flame on it. It's also a night mare to clean off every case.

Bad annealing is better than none, but there’s an annealeaz for $200 in the classifieds. There’s also a bench source for $400. Save yourself the trouble.

Tempilaq is a waste of money. Just aim at the neck/shoulder junction, set the machine for the first hint of faint red glow in a dark room and anneal those suckers.

Don't bother with anything like 700°F tempilaq to determine if the neck is getting the annealing. Just look for the red glow of the neck in a darkened room and when you see that, that's when you take it out of the flame and note the amount of time it took you to get there. That red glow indicate a temperature of ~1,100°F (~650°C). Then repeat with the same position in the flame and that amount of time. If you want to use tempilaq to monitor temperature further down the case to get an idea of how hot the body is getting, get some 400°F tempilaq and paint a line all the way down the side of the body of the case. You won't ruin a case with this method unless you leave it in for a very long time and the red glow is there for several seconds and goes down below the shoulder.

PS: keep in mind that different brass's composition and neck wall thickness will dictate different amounts of time it takes for that red glow. So, if you're doing different brands of brass, you'll have to test each to find the right amount of timing.

I have an Annealeze works like a champ--I keep a can full of Test Dummy Brass in the sizes I do --I set up and tune on it with the test dummy brass until I get it just right--it was intimidating at first but after a few sessions you get confident and braver then it is easy
The setting is a little different every time as you tune the flame size / time etc --just go for that dull red in dark --you will get the hang of it
You will get tired of doing one at a time pretty quick

I started out with a drill and a piece of steel golf shaft. It worked but got tiresome in a hurry. I ended up buying an Ugly Annealer which I really like.

I’ve never used tempilaq, just counted seconds in my head.
Don't understand why guys think they even need Templaq. Impossible to soften the case body when annealing. 600F+ for a fraction of a second won't anneal.

Original Mikes ! Love it adjust the speed dial for a little glow .
Old Mike got ripped.
E-Bay $200 Knock-off copy.
My Pal got one He said good the cost ???

Probably reassurance they are doing it right. I did a little reading on it and thought about getting some but didn’t.

Red for 1-2 seconds is doing it correctly. I doubt anyone that buys Templaq is buying it for the 1050-1100F temp range. Guys still think they can anneal at 750F which is ridiculus. You think your annealing correctly and your 300F below a flash annealing temp. It's real simple red and your done.

None. Templaq is shit. Use you eye to gauge length of time in flame until the brass neck and beginning of shoulder reach a dull red coloration in a very dark room. This can be hard with a flame setup and is much easier to see using induction annealers.

I eyeball it all the time with a single torch. Very happy with the results. I don't worry about consistency because I don't think there is much difference between red for 1 or two seconds. I think I am consistent with the flame. Both my GH hunting rifles shoot under .400" with just about any load. I was a metallurgical lab tec for 47 years and I have read just about all the techy literature on annealing brass.

I agree Templaq is stupid. To many pretend metallurgist putting info out. With everything that's been on this website I cannot believe so many guys think you should anneal at 750F. Bad info just repeats. How many guys still think you have to quench the cases in water to make sure the body doesn't soften.
