Annealing help

I'am new to the annealing game and i have read alot about it.I went out and bought two Tempil sticks. 650 degree and 800 degree. [This stick is more like chalk than a crayon.]
I'll make a circle around the case and put it to the flame and the {mark} will turn the brass a brighter brass color then turn black. Is the brighter mark what I'am looking for or is it the black mark. Also, if you clean the brass up.I can"t figure out head from tails.
Thanks Anthony

800 is to hot !!!!
650 is a tiny bit on the low side but will work OK.
Mark the case just below where the neck shoulder junction meets.
Those sticks should melt when the correct heat range is reached, if it's turning black you need more heat quicker to keep it from burning.

A first time annealer here; do you feel that the Temp sticks are a must or can you go off of the "just as it starts to emit a slight glow" if you do it in the dark?

I read the one article from the archives I believe on annealing and it mentioned it took about 6 to 7 seconds to reach the correct temp and that you could just watch for the dull glow if you did it in a dark room.

Was just curious since I don't have any of the temp marker stuff that goes up to 650 degrees+; just the 475 degree liquid that came with the annealing kit.

,with a bucket of water on the floor between the legs - heat with a gas blow torch)

A tip I use is to hold the case by the head, watch the neck color when heating, dull red). When you get to the heat needed drop in in a pan of water. You'll never over heat the case because it will get too hot to hold, providing your hands aren't heat hardened.
