Anchor coyotes with little hide damage

What are you using to take coyotes and not damage the hide? FMJ and there will be runoffs, how about something big and slow, 30-30, 357Max, etc. Under a light the range will be 125 yards and less. How about a 7-08 with 140 Nosler Ballistic Tip? What are you using?

I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.
300wm 185gr at 3200, 300wsm 168gr at 3150, 270wsm 150gr at 3250.

I just want 'em gone.
In all honesty if I'm deer hunting I'll blast them with whatever I have.

150 yards and under I like my AR 223 loaded with Hornady 50 gr SX, even works for raccoon. Shots out to 300 yards 17 rem with 29 or 30 gr hp. Long range fur saving 22-250 Nosler 55 bt. The Speer 52 hp, is pretty good out of both 22's also.

I've killed an awful lot of coyotes at this range with a .221 Fireball and a 40 grn. V-Max. One hole going in, nothing coming out. YMMV dedogs

My favorite has to be my xp-100 pistol 17 Fireball 25 gr. v-max. Have a buddy who's big into it (especially fur market) and he uses a 243 70 gr. Nosler BT. Says it works better than he'd expected. Also loved my old Ruger 77 22-250 AI/40 gr Nosler combination. Always nice to see them killed instantly on impact.

.22 BR with 40 gr V-max pushed about 3800 fps or so. With good placement this will not exit 95 percent of the time. No cartridge is perfect, but this is pretty damn close. Based on 20 years and many different combinations tried. Be sure and place the shot center mass. Carry on!

My goto coyote rifles are the 222 Rem, 22-204 and 22-250 with 52gr Speer HP's in the 22-250 and 222R and 40gr NBT's in the 22-204 and I hunt for fur.

The pictures reminded me of some of the fox deer hunters would bring to me when I worked in the fur business in the late 70's and early 80's. Fox prices were high, north of $80 for prime fox handled properly. The route stops right after deer season hunters would bring in fox that were almost blown into two pieces after being shot by a 30-06 core lokt or similar through the shoulder. The deer hunters had heard that fox were up to $80 and assumed they would get that.

When offered $5-10 for the scrap pieces of fox some of the hunters would fly off the handle complaining how I was just trying to rip them off as I just paid $80 for that last fox and I should get the same. The best thing I could say was try selling this to XYZ whoever was the closest competitor.

Both the 17hmr or 17 Hornet with 15.5 NTX anchor them, bullet entrance, no exit. at those ranges.

Since 1986 my best fur friendly rifle has been the 17 rem, when fur prices crashed in late 80's into the 90's. I could still sell trapped fur and 17 shot fur. Shot many hundreds of Red fox and winter raccoon with the Berger 25 gr match VARMINT. Very seldom had any stitching,even through I head shot a large percentage. When the fox population fell as confinement hog buildings moved in, coyote populations exploded. I changed to a 22-250 and Nosler 55 bt. With the big swings in coyote fur prices, I went back to the 17 rem. But a bullet change was needed. I went to 29-30 gr WCD and other niche suppliers. Since getting my first suppressor late last fall, I shifted back to the 223,22-250 when stalking pairs. Suppressed I shot almost 100% of the pairs, I have not threaded any of my 17's, and probably will not as I run 24-26" barrels. And never had a real issue shooting pairs of Red fox. When calling coyote last winter, I still used the 17's, to eliminate any exits and no need to range.

I hate exploding good hides, even if prices aren't high. I do know how to run a needle and thread. (started out with a 243)

I'm a fan of 40 gr. V-Max. Usually no exits, but no guarantees. That's with 222 and 218.

Have since turned 222 into a 20, and haven't got coyote calling since. I think it will be great with 35 or 40 V-Max.

I don't feel the need, or have the skill to shoot em further than 300 yds or so, so I don't worry about heavier bullets. jd

I’ve killed a pile of coyotes with a 223 shooting 52 grain Speer flat base hp bullets at 3100 FPS. Inside 125 yards you won’t have to worry about it’s low BC and I’ve never needed to sew a hide on a coyote shot with that setup. It’s not fancy but it’s highly effective.

Believe it or not either a 260, 7mm-08 or even my 308 with BTHP match bullets. It's unsurvivable, it passes right thru, it's accurate and it's fun.
I do my own taxidermy and it's a lot easier to sew up two 308 bullet holes then try to patch up a coyote whose lower jaw is found four feet from the rest of him!!!

Edit: coyotes never run off. I always see them fall. For some strange reason, most of them spin around in circles, yelping and biting their hind foot until they just fall over.
