Am I being too anal about copper fouling?

There are a gazillion dedicated copper cleaners out there. I settled on the BoreTech product as being best for copper removal.

Any brass jag is going to give a false reading since brass is a mixture of copper and zinc.

Get a few aluminium jags and use those.
Agreed. I had also have good experience with Barnes CR-10.

Just called my gunsmith, he said not to be anal about it and just shoot it. I will leave my Dewey rod and patches at home when I go to the range. I guess its a force of habit and too much coffee.

I am old, ugly, and cynical, so take this in that vein, but I had always assumed these incredibly elaborate cleaning procedures to be a practical joke that got out of hand.

That is, a manufacturer's CS department, having grown tired of questions about break-in procedures, one day decided to come up with a completely Rube Goldberg alternative to 'just shoot it and clean normally'. They published it; others, seeing it, thought it was funny enough to play along with.

Dewey sales aluminum jacks and brush adaptors for their rods. Unforturnately their older rods still have brass ferrules and they don't offer aluminum replacements. However using the aluminum jacks, brush adaptors, and nylon brushes with aluminum or steel cores cuts down on the false positives considerably even with the brass ferrules.

I've been using Bore Tech CU+2 copper remover for copper after clearining with Shooter's Choice to remove carbon fouling. When I've exhausted my current supply of Shooter's choice I going to switch to Bore Tech's carbon remover and use a brass brush to remove carbon then finish with CU+2 and non brass jags, adaptors and brushes.

Maybe I'm wrong about this but I believe the mechanical action of a brass brush is needed to do a good job in removing carbon fouling. That's why I'm going to adopt using two separate solvents, i.e. the carbon removal first then followed by the copper remover. While Bore Tech Eliminator does both you can't use a brass brush because the copper component in Eliminator attack the brush. I have discussed this with Bore Tech's rep and he said this ok. Comments welcome - I've got to quit using Shooter's Choice because the wifey hates the smell and is nagging me to death about it. :(
